I need to amend a new/expanded section of my patch. I am going to purchase compost this year instead of manure. What questions should I ask? I know some people have talked about added nitrogen. I wanted to know if there is anything else I should look for. My local Garden shop is well known and been around for years but I have stumped him a couple of times.

Ask if they had the compost tested at a soil lab. If they have, request a copy of the test. Then you will know exactly what you are getting.

Ask to look at it first too. I have had great compost and crappy from the same place. It really needs to be broken down with little wood in it. I have a theory that with an early springs there is a much higher early demand, and then sometimes you might get partially composted compost if that makes sense. Or simply put, just make sure it is at least very broken down and everything has been "cooked".

I have a soil company I work with.. They allow me to go and look at there yard to see what type of blend I want... And how the materials look. Before they load it into dump trucks
