Much Of my patch is done growing and will be out by this weekend. I was looking into planting a cover crop to boost organic matter. I am in Minnesota so is there anything other than rye that I could plant before winter?

Check out this resource, Reed. I planted winter wheat since its what I could find this year. We're getting late in the season for most options, so get your cover crop down ASAP.

If you are just looking to add organic matter, collect maple leaves, spread them on the garden and chop them up file with your mower. They will break down quickly. Cover crops will also prevent erosion, sequester nitrogen, keep soil biology going, and suppress weeds. Oats and brassicas like radish or turnips will take some cold but will winter kill. Brassicas will have some hard seed that won't germinate until spring, and they are hard on mycorrhizae. Winter wheat and rye will over winter and you will have to kill it in the spring. And in your area, the sooner you plant, the better.

Get a bag of seed oats from fleet farm and broadcast over your patch, should be some time yet to pop n green over the area.

Buckwheat worked weļ for me. Also clover is said to be exceptional (never tried it though)
