As the handle implies I’m new to pumpkins this year. Actually I’m new to any gardening. My daughter brought home a seedling in a cup from school and I felt bad so I went to a garden store (first lesson: shop around!) and got some soil and a pot. I’m hooked!!! Anyway I probably bit off more than I can chew with this project but I am determined! (By the way her little plant turned out to be a mammoth sunflower, second lesson: Know what your growing!) So my question is about the tertiary vines! Everything I’ve seen and heard and read so far says to remove these as soon as you see ‘em! Problem for me is if its a video the person is usually in the way and then “poof” they pinch something off. Can someone please help me to identify the tertiary vines with a link or a pic? I’m going to the library in the morning! Oh yeah! Just FYI. I am growing 4 Ferry-Morse Jack-O-lanterns. I know they aren’t BIG ones but I gotta start somewhere. I direct sowed three seed and scarified two others that I speed germinated 24 hrs and were sowed the next day. Only one didn’t germinate and it was a direct sow. They are 18 days old and almost a foot tall. Lots of stuff going on in the corners and I don’t want to hurt my ladies.

Welcome, I'd maybe post this in new growers or the general discussion forum since there isn't much traffic here.
A tertiary vine is the 3rd vine. The main vine is the actual vine that comes out of the ground. A secondary vine connects directly to the main or grows off the main. Secondaries are typically grown perpendicular to the main vine and held in place by bamboo stakes until they root in the ground. Anything that grows off the secondary is a tertiary.

You wont have tertiaries yet... If you want to spend a few bucks for a fun tutorial, many of Joel Hollands videos have many good explanations. Hollandsgiants.com Not saying its that hard to figure out but I enjoy his videos.

Not sure every video has the explanation of tertiaries though... but if you're really determined to know you could call them and ask them.
