1. Recently I wondered about abbreviations on these little envelops with the seeds in them, I mean the abbreviations coming after the year ... like 1200 fantasy 05 "EST" or "DMG".

Ok I think I found out that the ones mentioned mean "estimated" (probably weigh not from a certified scale but reckoned) and "damaged" - the pumpkin doesn`t offically count, has holes etc. But there are more of these abbs. I don`t remember right now ...

2. Can anybody explain the word "flatvine" to me - maybe in german, if I won`t get it in English (reason why I posted this here and not in the beginner forum.

Hi Heino,

okay, jetzt gehts los!

EST, that is from the table used to estimate wieghts, not wieghed, just measured, side to side, front to back and circumference. (that answer alone will require a new post from you to ask what? LOL)

DMG, you answered well, weighed on a scale, but damaged, a hole or so.

Flatvine is like having a ribbon noodle. The vine is flat like a ribbon, similar to a computer cable if you know what i mean.

Keep asking questions it is the only way to learn!!!

And by the way, i hope others will answer to correct my mistakes!

Owen, thank you too. I`ve read about the measuring systems and think I understand, what it is about (in theory ;-)). Everthything clear though. What concerns the expression "flatvine". "CONCERNS" may be the right word in either sense ... I`ve read that it happens quite a lot of times and that the plant is garbage then. So, considering my situation, I took 7 seeds, only four of them sprouted, which was also my fault, because 1. I soaked them for too long (like 24 hours or so, the 826 Handy seed already had mildew on it) and 2. the soil in which I planted them might have been too humid from time to time ...

Sprouted seeds:

826 Handy
621 Pley
628 Olsen
474 Olsen

Strong, good looking seedlings all of them, 1st real leaf and all ..

Not sprouted:

638 Olsen (to sad, my favourite coulour)
459 White
631 Pley

I want to plant 3 and do now have the coice of 4 plants. But I`d really like to give away 1 or 2 to local friends (for a little competition you know).

If I have to calculate, that maybe one or two of my seedlings could flatvine, it will be the end of my "give away plan" and I could end up with only two plants myself, of which one will throw a pumpkin, which at last will be eaten up by mice (the pessimistic version ;-)) ). So what I did, I soaked two backups yesterday and planted them (another 631 Pley and 459 White) I know Michel, you wanted me not the plant yours as long as not proven, I just couln`d resist ;-)). Am I much too late by starting my backups now? Read about an US grower, who after losing his first round of seedlings started some in Mid June, one of them being his new PB in the end of season. What do you think? However, not wanting to spoil another 638 I lack my orange grower now ...

Heino, I have planted the 628 a few times and I have not had a problem with it going flat vine. It might happen, just no history of it yet.

I believe that it is not to late to start a new seedling. The loss of a few weeks may mean the difference at the end of the season of a few houndred pounds, but most likely, you would still have the opportunity to get to 600-700 pounds if the weather cooperates with you. I still have a couple of 638's left, if you would like go ahead and start another and I can send you some more.

Thanks Owen, I will start another 638 today, for I saw "Thea" grew her most beautiful one with it last year. Just let me know before you run out of them, that would be kind. To be sure, if you had to choose between your 628 and 474 (both sprouted) which one would it be. The other one, I will give to a friend. What do offsprings of the 628 usually look like, for I have to admit, I don`t like the "wide" pumpkin shape to much. I mean those pumpkins looking like "wheels" you know. I`m really not sure, I expressed myself understandable, sorry for that.

Heino, the 638 is doing very very well, she sprouted first this year and the plant is beautifull. The coulour was really good. I had two bad germination, and I will start again two seeds tonight. We will see, the weather will perhaps make miracles....
If you need 638 OLsen for next year, I still have one or two to share (I will keep the others for me !).

Heino, here is a link to the 474. This pumpkin is a cross beetween the 805 pukos x 628 olsen. the 628 olsen was a 707 toftness x 805 pukos cross. i love the genes in this pumpkin. it was 19% heavy itself, and the genetic lineage is as good as any AG you will find (IMHO).

On the very next page after the above link is a picture of my 599.5. it is a progeney of the 628 olsen. the 599.5 went 20% heavy. it was not a wheel shaped pumpkin like its mother at all. And yes, you expressed yourself just fine!

Which to chose? I think that you will do equally well with either seed. I am growing the 628 this year myself.

Please send me an email as a reminder abuot the 638 and i will get them in the mail.

Sophie, looks, we`re just in the same situation, starting late 638s this year. Thanks for your offer too. In case our 2nd attempts might be successful we can compare our orange beauties developments. I`ll keep an eye on your diary ;-).

If I may make one note. For the chance at a very orange and beautiful fruit, please consider asking Maritn for a few seeds. Not that I do not want to see my seeds get planted, I do, but, Martin has some excellent crosses that will for sure produce some real beauties!

Ja, ich habe deinen Brief bekommen. Danke.
Ich war einige Tage krank und konnte die Samen erst am letzten Dienstag abschicken. Hast du sie noch nicht bekommen?
Aber jetzt kommts... ich hab die AG Samen vergessen! Muss wohl am Fieber gelegen haben...lol
Ich hab nur die hohen Tomaten und Sonnenblumen geschickt die du ursprünglich wolltest und hab vergessen dass ich in der Email geschrieben habe ich würde auch von den AGs, von denen ich noch Samen übrig habe, welche mitschicken.
So, wie sollen wir das jetzt machen? Ich würde dir natürlich sehr gerne welche schicken, es könnte aber zu spät zum Säen sein, wenn du sie dann bekommst. Ich denke du würdest sie bis zum 25. Mai haben. Ist das ok oder zu spät? Gib mir kurz Bescheid und ich könnte schon morgen welche abschicken.

Hallo Martin,

Danke für die Tomaten und Sonnenblumensamen. Sind am Freitag angekommen und von mir gleich probeweise je 4-5 Stück angesäht. Ja, ich hab natürlich gesehen, dass keine AG Samen drin waren. Also für dieses Jahr denke ich bin ich eh zu spät um nochmal AG Samen zu säen, hab letzte Woche noch 2 Stück gestartet und denke, dass ich mit denen noch recht spät dran bin. Werde wohl hauptsächlich auf die 4 Pflänzchen, die ich jetzt habe vertrauen müssen, schätze, dass wird schon passen ...

Wegen den Samen, das eilt dann eigentlich nicht so. Wäre einfach fürs nächste Jahr. Bei der Auswahl müsstest Du mir behilflich bitte sein. Ich möchte deine persönlichen Reserven nicht schröpfen und kann auch schwer abschätzen, welchen von den Samen was zuzutrauen ist, mir geht es also in erster Linie darum, dass der Kürbis möglichst schön sein sollte. Gross wäre natürlich auch nicht schlecht ;-)). Ernsthaft, ich denke villeicht zwei Stück von den 810 Dill x 1016 Daletas wären schon ok für mich. Auch die letzten beiden von dir genannten wären sicher ok für mich, müsste dann halt mehrere pflanzen, wenn ev. welche hohl sind. Und wenn Du mir einen von deiner Reserve geben möchtest, gerne. Ich pflanze den dann auch 06 versprochen. Aber welches nun der vielversprechenste Kandidat wäre, da müsstest Du mir bitte weiterhelfen ... aber wie gesagt, es eilt nicht ...

... was ich für heuer schon dazugelernt habe, ist, einfach ein paar Samen mehr zu pflanzen, damit man Reserven hat. Von meinen 7 Versuchen, waren ja nur 4 erfolgreich (ich hoffe, sie bleiben es). Und wie oben schon geschrieben hattte ich eigentlich das Ziel, da ohnehin erste saison, wenn nicht schon den grössten, dann wenigstens einen sehr schönen AG zu kultivieren, Da hat mir der 638 Olsen doch sehr gefallen, aber leider naja. Nun habe ich zwar 4 Pflänzchen, kann aber kaum sagen, dass oder ob da eine Kandidatin dabei sein wird zur Miss Pumpkin Europe 2005 ;-) - Leider habe ich die Bilder von Ludwigsburg in deinem Tagebuch 04 erst kürzlich gesehen, schon hätte ich mich in Sachen "nice shape and deep orange colour" schon vorher an dich gewandt. Nungut, ich gebe jetzt eben alles um möglichst ein grosses Viech zu ernten im Herbst, bin schon sehr gespannt.

Übrigens ich bin jetzt mittlerweile auch mehr oder minder schwer erkältet nach zwei Tagen "Feldarbeit" bei zt. strömendem Regen ... Also gute Besserung von einem Leidensgenossen!

alles klar... tut mir echt Leid!
Die von dir genannten Samen könnte ich dir für 2006 selbstverständlich zur Verfügung stellen. Vielleicht ist bis dahin ja der ein oder andere meiner 2004er Samen schon "geprüft". Und natürlich gibt's dann ja auch noch meine 2005er Samen für 2006. Sollten wieder einige Kreuzungen dabei sein, die deinen Anforderungen entsprechen...
