I just noticed yesterday the beginnings of some tiny black eggs and aphids on the 869.5 Calai at home under the leaves. I sprayed right away with Spruzit which is Pyrethrine and Rape Oil.
Last year I made the mistake of ignoring them until it was too late and in fall I had no leaves left on the plant to push the pumpkin. It was actually two years ago...
I believe now that the growers who will get the best growth in September will be the ones with the healthiest leaves.
Has anyone else started having the same problem? Michel

Michel, I`ve had aphids right in the beginning when the plants were small. I used a bit of Dimethoat as Martin had adviced plus I sprayed some fungicid, for I was told aphids are first and the might bring on powdery mildew second. Should be time again to spray for it could be amistake assuming the aphids might - just like the slugs - leave the plant alone, once it has gained a certain size. Will spray in the next days again ...

The aphids won't leave the plant alone like slugs! They will just multiply like crazy and enjoy sucking the sap out of the leaves of a bigger plant. A teaspoon of ordinary dish soap in about 10 liters of water helps too but I don't know if it would have a reaction with the Dimethoat so I wouldn't recommend it. Best of luck! Michel
