Stem split on the 584.2Frei03 this morning (you can see a picture in my diary). Owen I feel like you last year. Good luck to all growers and I hope this is the last split for this season in Germany - Peter

Peter, I know exactly how you feel right now. Hang in there, the summer is still long.

Sorry to hear this Peter, hope you have some other plants to compete with. 2 years ago i had the same problem whith a fruit of 250 kg that split on the begin of august. Maybe it is not a good idea to pollinate too early in the season??

Peter, man I am sorry to hear that! What bad luck! That was that awesome fruit that was already close to 150 kg and growing about 10 kg per day, right? I bet this was the largest fruit in Germany so far this year! I can't believe how much bad luck we again seem to have. First that really bad weather in May and June and when we (esp. Owen and you) finally had a good one going - split. How are your other fruits doing? Have you measured them yet? If I remember correctly you had a really nice one on the 1178 Kuhn.

Martin, I`ll measure my 1178.5 fruit today in the evening (the first time) and I`ll post a picture of it in my diary. It`s a very goog looking fruit and I think it`s really "ready for take-off". The 1178.5 is "now" my biggest one in the patch. The other fruits (707 / 855 / 1005 ...) are much smaller. The 1178.5 has very thick vines and I hope that these vines will help me to reach a new personal best (more than 714.1). Martin I think you still know that my 714.1Frei03 and my 709.9Frei03 did grow on the same plant (802Dill) and they both did grow on secondaries like my 555.1Frei04 . But now the 1178.5 fruit grows on the main vine, about 11.5 feet away from the stump. There is a second fruit (the same cross: x1005Mombert02) on the first secondary of the 1178.5 but this fruit has only half the size of that one on the main. By the way, my 584.2 is still growing, but as soon as the split goes into the pumpkin itself, I`ll cut it and maybe I`ll get some good seeds of this fruit.

Wow, Segio! You are doing really well this year again! Many fruits in the 300 lbs range that are not even 30 days old! Sometimes I wish I lived in Italy or Spain, but that is only for the pumpkins. I myself can't take the heat! Lol However, I fear your silicone won’t help a lot. It will work on an older fruit that is almost done growing and doesn’t expand a lot more but younger, still growing fruits are a different story. But what to loose, I’d also give it a try.
And yes, Peter, I can still remember the details about your 802 plant in 2003. These fruits had HUGE stems! The biggest ones I've seen so far! If I were you I'd leave the back up fruit on the first secondary of your 1178 plant until it is at least 300 lbs. These plants can easily support two fruits, especially when they are on separate vines. Maybe you want to leave on two all the time till fall. It is my observation that this really helps with preventing splits and might only cost you a few pounds on your bigger fruit if anything at all.
Good luck to all! GROW ‘EM BIG AND ORANGE and HOLD 'EM TOGETHER!

Sorry to read that Peter. I also think that is an amazing fruit. I kept an eye on that diary pictures as to motivate myself for next year to be earlier ... too bad now.

@Owen: You seem to be haunted. Keeping my fingers crossed this won`t happen with my tiny pumpkins. Nevertheless some of your fruits are looking really good. I think with a bit of luck you might have to buy all of us a beer at Ludwigsburg ;-)

"If this pumpkin makes it to a weigh off I will buy all growers I know from this site that show up at the weigh off a beer. " O.O. --> If you don't mind I will prefer a Coke! LOL I don't think you will have a problem with the 1056 Dueck fruit. All normal looking ones seem to cause problems for you so this one should do ok for you...

@Heino, I have felt that way since I started this hobby, it takes over your life, at least it has mine.
@Martin, I hope you are right, maybe I should grow the 922.

If you need any 922s, I have a few in the fridge that I would never grow. And it did really well for Michel in 2003 when it produced his biggest, sound fruit that year. Anyways, good luck this year. Let's get the best out of it!
