The most beautiful pumpkin gets the Howard Dill Award.

What should the most beautiful squash get?

And no, do not say the Glenn Andrews award.

I think there's enough controversy with squash and colors etc and quite frankly not enough participation at the individual wieghoffs for a prettiest squash award....besides...aren't all green squash just beautiful ? !

there is no controvery at our weigh off. pumpkin or squash the heaviest wins. That is how it should be, or am I crazy?

I have seen some squash in my time that I would consider superior in looks to almost all but the most perfect pumpkins.

As far as a GPC stance, I am seeing a lot of good sites that didn't have even a single squash this year, and many with only one or two. I would hate to get into a situation where we have to pick an overall winner out of the batch, as that mess (beauty in the eye of the beholder, ect.) was why the HD award was switched to being awarded at each individual site.

With apologies to Will Rogers: " I never meet a true greenie I didn't like!"....lol
Perhaps the Green beauty prize could be awarded regionally (if numbers warrant) if not perhaps nationally....only one nominee per official weigh-off site.
Have some neutral(non-partial) committee of judges selected as volunteers to judge entries (3 digital pics submitted with each nominee)...possibilty???...or too cumbersome?

How 'bout a Len Stellpflug award? Len was without doubt the best giant squash grower for MANY years in the early days of growing giants.

Len's name comes to mind as the original and most prominent squash grower of his era and I think it would be fitting to name it after him. I think the award needs a great trophy to go with it, and no money. Maybe Len would give up his divining rod and have it mounted on a nice piece of hickory and it could be a traveling trophy.
And to make it fair the winner would be assigned based on a vote of some unbiased party such as the winners of the howard dill award from each weighoff which has that award.

I like your thinking Nic. Squash need more recognition and this could help with that.

As a squash grower, I think this is a great idea. I also agree with Nic on both the naming and the voteing method. I like the idea of one award for this. I understand completely why we went to site awards for the Howard Dill, but it oes waterdown the honour a bit. As G pointed out there are a lot of sites without squash and many with only one. If you did this as a site award, just about all squash grown at this point would win..lol

I will bring this up with the GPC

thinking back when I was growing I believe the howard dill award didn't have to be awarded at a weighoff site if there wasn't a nice looking pumpkin entered that was worthy of the award.
