I have a theory, that squash are generally more efficient useds of nitrogen (or at least the current squash genetics are). For this reason I believe they should be planted on your poorest piece of ground and fed less nitrogen than you woudl pumpkins. This is why some folks a problems getting squash to pollinate and why they are generally more agressive plants.
Just my theory John

I think until recently most squash were grown on the poorer soils and fed less nitrogen...and less pesticides, fungisides, and general care....and they still had pollination issues. I believe the pollination issues are genetic going back to the 900/895.5/and 848* gene pools, and once we eliminate the tendencies through seed selection they wont have that reputation....just my theory...Glenn
