Reflecting back on my squash effort this year, it's an absolute miracle that I was able to grow an 895 Hester to 1003 pounds.....

1. Seed was in potting mix for 7 days and didn't germinate. I pulled it and "advanced" it, 12 hours later I have a tap root.

2. Seedling took nearly two weeks before it turned green and started to grow.

3. Planting spot was plowed and tilled two weeks before plant date. Some left over gypsum and kelp meal were the only ammendments. Soil is heavy clay and compacted tightly due to major July rainfall (9+ inches)

4. Plant produced a total of 8 side vines over the length of a 25 foot main.

5. Fruit sunk into the clay during July rains, creating a crater. Thank goodness for a dry summer.

6. Record heat and drought.

7. Cut large slice out of basal crown to drain foam, three x one inch slice.

8. Foliar applications of fish, seaweed and calcium, a little "turbo" juice and C02 to finish.

9. Major PM, could not control it period. Leaves looked horrible by mid August.

10. Developed quarter sized soft spot on the blossom end in September.

I could go on and on, it's just a freakin' miracle!
