I am curious if a squash does not make the colour rule is it still listed as a squash. If it turned out orange and was entered in the pumpkin category I assume it would not be listed as a squash and labeled * as such. It would be confusing come seed selection time if it was listed as a squash on the seed envelope but the fruit did not make it by GPC standards.

If you looking for street opinions, mine would be: if it was a squash from a squash( a parent seed that was judged and determined to be a squash) and didnt make the color rule but was close then it should have an asterisk for squash and in the notes or remarks say "judged to be a pkn due to insufficient color".
Another way to look at it is : If you were a squash grower looking to play with squash genetics or looking for squash possibilities for next year would you want to see it listed so you see it when you search "squash"?
An example would be the 963DeBacco10....it should very definitely be listed in any genetic website as a squash , but with a remark.

I agree totally with Glenn on this and that has been my approach to registering my fruit on the AGGC. I am quite careful to explain if and why any of my fruit don't make the colour rule. Believe me I have grown plenty that have been ruled pumpkin now I am very clear on what makes it and what doesn't. I take a lot of ribbing (no pun intended) when I show up at a weigh off with one of my colour challenged fruit. I keep growing these lines because they go very heavy, however, I am about ready to go in a different direction.

Aaron...by and large they go heavy to very heavy to chart. In the olden days when I started they were way ahead of the curve in per cent heavy-impressively so over pumpkins. Now, for whatever reasons--mixing squash into pkns, cultural advances, or my favorite used reason- the allowance of 35%ers that would be declared squash under the old rules are now used as pumpkins in mixes and alone. This allowed the heaviness to be used w/o major fears of DQ. There also became more serious orange only attempts by the orange growers to get the heavy in and they were very successful ! Now, its common to have 15-20% heavy and orange when 10 years ago good orange meant light to chart ! Its looking (to me anyway)like in the next update to the estimation chart squash in general will be closer to chart because of all the big heavy pkns..

Glenn, I emailed you a squash question and wondered if you got it or not?

Could you please email me at giantpumpkins@shaw.ca

Thanks/Glenn (the other one)

ok. I got it. The quick answer which is what you appear to want is it was a gpc- 35 or so % green at contest so they declared it a squash. Thats the old rule. That is why we lobbied to change the rule.
what you can do I don't know.....thats Duncan's call.

What is the definition of a real squash? Aren't most squash grown today decended from the 900 Lyons squash which came from two pumpkins?
