ok folks lets find out who really is interested in furthering the green squash interest. before anyone could step any further into a possible new group/organization for the benefit of advancing green squash interest and weights ? two questions need answering.
pls keep in mind this is not to detract from the gpc or any other green squash organizations. i would also thing the present gpc rules and any gpc competitions, arrangements ,recordings, color rules, etc, for green squash should remain as is. you would not be reinventing the wheel, just getting the vehicle to go faster.ie --- bigger and more in line with giant oumpkins down the road.
1. who would be interested in taking an active roll in administrating this new organization ? forming a committee and raising necessary funds, setting up basic club rules ,etc?
2. who would contribute financially to a new organization by purchasing a one year membership? help in fundraising programs?(ya cant do nuttin with out the muttin)
pls post your answers below.

Sounds like an interesting experiment, although this project would need to be careful of stepping on any toes obviously. I'd join up... strength in numbers if nothing else.

I'm up for it but I have a couple questions. I'm fairly new to this whole thing. How much does it cost to join the GPC? I don't believe I have ever seen a membership cost. If you are talking about a green squash organization like the GPC shouldn't it be patterned after the GPC? How did the GPC raise money to get started? But maybe this isn't the idea of a new organization. Are you saying that an international club should subsidize local weigh offs to increase interest ($$$)?

To 1. active roll, for it mine is English, unfortunately, not well enough, but with certainty with pleasure. For the German-speaking part of the world any time with pleasure.
To 2. membership I would be present immediately.

Wow Dick, look how many people have volunteered to be a board member. That doesn't happen every day!
Dick, you are automatically a member of the GPC by attending a GPC sanctioned event. We do not solicit individual memberships, it is purley done on a site by site basis.

I'm not sure I quite understand this proposal. I grow about 20 different kinds of giant vegetables, several at international level and some just for fun. I get the seeds by trading or just use carefully selected seeds from a specialist retailer. Total costs per year are about $5.
I bring these, including my squash, to the Dutch Giant Vegetable Championship. It costs nothing to enter them. They get an official status.
But suddenly I need to join a club in order to grow a squash and I have to pay for it too. Do I also need to join a club for the other 19 giant veg classes? That's going to cost me a lot of money.
In Belgium and Holland about 20-30% of all AGs are squash. There is no prize money in Belgium and in Holland the squash compete with the pumpkins for the prize money. A squash won in 2007, was 2nd in 2009 and 2010.
So what are the benefits of a squash club?

some are missing the point here. my suggestions were just that ---suggestions. they were made in response to reading complaints regarding green squash, so i offered some commentary. me personally? feel there are many people who have responded because they agreed.
there will always be smart asses who like to throw in a dig here and there. its just in their nature. they cant help being what they are.

So anyone that dares to disagree with your suggestion (and that is all it is) is a smart ass? If you make a suggestion, it really is possible not everybody will agree. It's not beneficial to the cause to instantly start name calling Dick, especially not as an outsider.
Part of my job is setting up projects and clubs throughout the western world, analysing problems and finding solutions.
I don't think there has been a correct analysis of the problem yet. I don't even know what the problem is or even if there is one and if there is one, how many squash growers really care. So at this point I would say no to starting up a club promoting squash growing. Perhaps a committee of people that actually grow squash to look into the matter would be better if the squash growing community deems this necessary.
So once again, I'm not sure I quite understand this proposal.

Wow Pap, don't think i've ever heard you respond that way. If your reffering to the people that don't agree, well that's there right.
I myself, don't think we need a different group to promote the squash. Maybe more people to grow them. But that's each person's choice. So i'am with Brad.

my last post on the subject. i never was concerned regarding who agreed and who did not.there will always be detractors and those that dont agree.
my intention was to help generate possible interest in a movement that squash growers might be interested in. it was not to detract from the gpc efforts but to add to them. to suggest possibly forming a group that might want to raise the overall interest by raising funds to beef up the cash awards. my thinking was in turn this could quite possibly get more growers to go with a green or two in their patch. nothing more

This year I'll be planting a squash in my back yard. I have hardly any space but I'll do it because I like the green color.
