This yyear ill be planting my first squash. My goal is to get one to the weighoff. Ill build my squash career from there. But how come there isnt more intrest on growing them? I understand that theyre judged on a totally different catagory. Why wouldnt anyone who has the space and time and ability not want to give it a go. I only know of a few that grow squash..

Kenny, you and I have differed on the money issue in the past but I just have to say it again....money. No payout. Great question, if one has the time and space, why not? Growing a greenie is hardly any different than growing an AG so I conclude it must be, at least in part, a payout issue.

My goal is to get on to a weighoff. I agree that money could be an issue. But during the weigh off season people do want to hear pumpkin not squash. I suppose it come down to what people want to hear. Owen I agree with you on that point. I just wish there where more people wanting to grow em.

It is a green/gray thing . I use to be a die hard greenie grower , just wanted to beat Rockys big squash at Altoona. Also I got angry everytime someone said, When is that thing gonna get orange ?

Since the GPC made it the feature veggie this year , you will see more growers trying them.

Ive always loved the look of a really Dark green squash. I'll be planting one to see how it goes. I'd be happy with getting it to the weighoff and having a squash that was respectable. If a grower grows a world champ why not try growing a world champ squash. I certainly think that would prove your growing skills.

when squash can consistantly compete against pumpkins people will show interest. There is the money concern, the color concern, and the size concern. Not all squash will qualify as a squash, i saw one at topsfield rulled a pkn, grown from a squash seed though. so therefore less people plant them based on those aspects. in order to grow a greenie you must want to grow a greenie and not care about prizes, judges or space used.

Semi, off-topic question...the pkns, and squash, are both Dill's Atlantic Giants? If so...say someone grows a greenie that weighs 1811 #'s this year, do they get the Orange Jacket? & the Green Jacket!!! Peace, Wayne

I am willing to say if one big hitter comes out for a season or 2 and produces some big beautiful squashes and freely gives these seeds out to be grown.

This could be enough to jump start the squash world and get tons of people grown them. I have seen it all to many times where seeds are highly sought after just because of the name attached to them. where seeds of the same cross with comparable weights of the unknown grower are never even considered.
