Is this a squash thing? I have a plant that all the female flowers are short and wide/fat, unlike the "normal" long taller female flowers. Some are even cracked open a little on the sides a few days before the top opens for pollination.

just wondering if this is ever seen on squash, or if I just happened to get a weird plant. Haven't set a fruit yet, so hopefully they will pollinate successfully.

Very little difference from my observations between squash and pumpkin flowers...they're all 'individuals' with some variations though. Some squash genetics seem to carry longer stocks and the 'belly buttons' look a little different at times on the 'green girls'.

I think I know what your talking about Pete.

On (squash) female blossoms that are not mature yet the flowers seem to be shorter and wider, but the day before blooming they seem to look the same.

I also noticed here this year my "Green Squash" plant seem to take longer to mature than my "Yellow Squash" plant.
