Will sun light make a squash darker or lighter if left uncovered ?

Some say they will get darker. Last year I had two big ones that very, very slowly started to turn greenish, but still had a lot of white/yellow on both of them.So they never made it to a weigh-off

I think it's best to almost grow them uncovered most of the time

I have one that is light green where a leaf is covering it, dark green where it's getting indirect light and a kinda ugly army green where it's been getting hit by the sun every day. So yeah... darker. But the indirect light seems to be the best, same for getting good color in pumpkins... I'm kind of a novice though so someone else may have better advice!

They will get darker green if left to the sun but eventually that area can also turn orange. I keep my squash covered all the time until later in the year.
