I'm admirative of squash whenever I see them but have never grown one since about 2002 (on an 895 Hester); I am intrigued by any and all shades of green and would love to branch out this year and put to good use my unwittedly-collected seeds of said squash. Can anyone point out the best points, lol, of squash growing, such as sellability as opposed to orange-as-heck pumpkins and what do you get out of it? Thanks for any - eric g

You have to want to grow it because you like growing big green squash. You have to approach it as a challenge to grow a squash bigger than pumpkins because most of the time your squash will be smaller than most of the pumpkins. You can't do it for the money because pumpkins and squash often times compete for the same prize fund and a pumpkins almost always wins the bulk of the prize fund. When I put my squash out for Halloween, I had many admirers come and check out my squash because they had never seen a squash as large as mine. If I put out a several hundred pound squash in my yard, maybe a Green Bay Packer fan might want to buy it.
If you're looking a new growing challenge, try growing a squash that can compete against pumpkins.

I took four or five to a pumpkin patch and I think they sold all but the largest. And they may have said the largest wasnt for sale, Im not sure. These were one or two man sized squash, except the largest which was above 200 lbs.
I'd say go for it. People like to have a choice, even if your buyers hate green (people are fickle so who knows!) it may make them feel better about buying themselves an orange one. The worst thing that could happen is it will boost your sales of orange pumpkins lol.

Those two squash alone inspire me to grow another squash.

In my area, most people know pumpkins big and small. When I had a 700 pound a few years back most people didn't know what it was. and would stop and chat to find out what it was. GO FOR IT YOU WILL BE SURPRIZED WITH THE INTEREST PEOPLE WILL SHOW.

A toughest act to even THINK of following! 'I'm not worthy, now - I'm not worthy, now...' 'If you mow yer lawn and find a SQUASH' - (insert funny GREEN comment here); That reminds me - I gotta look up some seeds I found. Judging by my PB and past performance, whatever I grow'd be green but not life-changing, lol; I'm a late bloomer! eg

Admitting to a mess ha ha. I'll admit I'm struggling to find some of my seeds. It might have something to do with having four shelves packed tight. Only a squirrel would be envious...

There may be a few growers that have a storage locker full of seeds.

I'll be sprouting the 744 T. Swarts 2004* (895.5 Hester* X Self) and the 1511.5 Haist '16* (1172 Haist (s)* X 961 Haist*) and see how it goes this year, as I do have WAYYY too many pumpkin seeds started butt only about a dozen of those will be actually paid a lot of attention to; ANY squash will be also 'as royalty'; I have plenty of random greenies and will gather them up for '24! I wish there was a second * button on my keyboard - I'm unknowingly getting better at he bass, I'll bet! Later---eric g
