Hello Squash Growers! I am a first year squash grower and need some advice...
I acquired an 1109 Jutras this winter. Its germinated and doing well. I have options for growing a pollinator but don't know the genetics well enough to determine what's good, and what to avoid.
I started a handful of seeds, these are what came up: 2118, 1701 and 1534 Jutras. The 2118 looks to have deformed cots; maybe it grows out still. The 1844.5 Holub, 1401 and 1407 have not germinated yet (Day 7). Still some hope there.
I have a selection of other seeds that could still be started.
Tobek 1592, 1500 est, 2030, 1997 and 1884.
Jutras 2838 and 1384.
Kline 1533.5
675 Maydan
1511.5 Haist
1578 Holub
1345 Sikorski
1581 Mathiowetz
181 M.Lee
563.5 Theil
or something else I don't have, but might be able to still get? I have room for only one plant, but I do have room for a smallish pollinator plant. If a particular cross is helpful to the genetics, I am happy to consider that.
Thanks!

I would suggest the 1578 Holub to bring a different lineage of genetics into the 1109 lineage.
I plan to pollinate my 1109 with 1264 Pierpont genetics.

My COLOR, at least, with the 1511.5 Haist: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=341797 Ned Sandercock had a green one off of it also but I could not find the pic in his diaries, but it was decent green, anyway. Good Luck! eg

Thanks WC I do see that both the 1109 and the 1578 have the 615 Cantrell in their lineage. But hey I went ahead and sanded and soaked the 1578. We will see if it goes; that seed is 10 years old now.

KC, I know that feeling. My 1033 Haist is 10 years old too.

Having grown the 1109 a couple times & having it blossom end split both times, I suggest you cross it with something with a thick blossom end. Greenies that have a blossom end that looks like a “dinner plate” or a “target” are going to have thinner blossom ends than the ones that don’t have that look.

The 1701 would be my pick. But you could let them all grow out at least 8-12 feet and thrn see which has a nice green & maybe barrel shaped female flower. The only way to really know what you've got, especially with the green lineages that sometimes go white/cream on you.

1511.5 Haist. ?? mix back in some true squash. Cindy's 1884 is 1109 x 2030. I am going to grow a couple this year and hope for the best. You get me to thinking I should grow a Pollinator plant and I have some older Haist seeds.

Hank, try a 996 Haist or 1362 Pugh as a pollinator plant.
