Just thought I'd put this out there. The Composting Council of Canada hosts an annual pumpkin growing contest. The pumpkin has to be grown using only compost as a supplement, no ferts or other enhancements. Generic Dill seeds are provided for the participants with the $25 entry fee. I have offered to provide better seeds (with the help of fellow growers of course) however, my offer so far has not been accepted. Winner gets $500 to donate to a local growers organization, and bragging rights of course. In case anyone is interested, http://www.compost.org/ccc_pumpkin_intro.html

TO possible participants:
The Compost Council of Canada ordered Dill's Atlantic Giant 500/700 pound seed from Howard Dill. We supplied them with seed from pumpkins weighing from 540 lbs. up to 1000 lbs., not so called "Generic Dill" seed which has been incorrectly posted. The Compost Council orders seeds from us every year for their contest. It's a great contest and we encourage growers to get involved.

Sorry, my bad. I had emailed one of the organizers, mentioned that I thought better seeds could be had, assuming he was supplying generic seeds. He hadn't corrected me, so I assumed I was right. But by the sounds of it, it'd be worthwhile entering if you've got room to do so. I'm sure the new Ontario growers club could put the $500 first prize to good use. Winning pumpkins have been for the most part 300 pounds or so for the last couple of years. I'd say everyone here has a decent shot.
