What a difference a year makes. Last year, we would have seen some of those seeds produce double what they brought this time. This growing season was strange to say the least and we now see some very different names in the HH arena.

I'm not sure if it's a combination of the current economic environment AND the number of large but unproven crosses made this year, but I've got to think that if any auction is going to be productive, it's going to have to include 1161 crosses. So many crosses were made with this seed, we're going to have to wait a year to see what really proves out. Going to be tough year indeed raising funds via the auction route. IMHO.

It's going to be tough on the auction organizers this year to put together enough attractive packages to bring in the money.

Interesting points Joe. I normally dig a little deeper but with two young ones and Christmas right around the corner, I just don't have the brass right now to step up!

I have to disagree. The Little Artshram Auction had many interesting and unique lots that have not appeared anywhere before. If you compare auction value from last year it was very close to what you would expect,

As the auctions go on the ones who will prosper will be the ones going after quality and not quantity.
In the Nov. & Dec. auctions people will bid on some older seeds but when it comes down to crunch time if you want a prosperous auction it could have as few as 12 lots. As long as those lots have a 1161,991,1725,1385,1421,985 to name a few.
I did like Nic's idea of putting in tomatoe,watermelon & muskmelon seeds as well.

It's one thing to go after it and another to achieve it. I received some great donations from some very generous growers so far and more on the way. I just don't think we'll see the numbers this year. Time will either prove or refute that.

As for watermelon lots, I'm waiting on Tony to handle that. He and Rob are better-connected and better educated than I am with watermelons. I do, however, plan a couple of long gourd lots. Those seem to have taken off in the past year and we'll see just how important it is to a long gourd grower to have certain seeds. Kirk Chenier and Joe Vunak were very generous.
