Soup & Tea have often been used in the same context this winter numerous times. However they are two very different animals.
Soup is Anaerobic = without air. AKA Fermented Compost Tea, is made by leaving compost and water in a container for a period of several days, allowing a build-up of anaerobic bacteria and fungi to chemically alter the mixture. A compost extract occurs when compost soaks in water for a couple of weeks or more. The end result is an anaerobic soup with perhaps a bit of aerobic activity on the surface
Aerobic = requiring air. It contains bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and other organisms. Good stuff for your plants.

soil soup is a tea with air introduced into it, it is not left sitting in a container to ferment.

I'm trying to learn to. I thought Soil Soup was a name brand. For a type of tea??
What would I be brewing if I mixed compost, alfalfa meal, worm casting, and molasses and then aerate it for 2 day is that a tea or soup. And what makes it one and not the other. Thanks Kenny

as long as it is applied within a few hours of brewing,,,this is a key often missed
aeriated teas start to turn to anaerobic as soon as you turn off that air supply to the brewer this is where "Soil Soup" has gotten the bad rap it was orginally sold to greenhouse/nurserys that resold the finished product they had produced fron the "kit" and didn't follow the guidelines given by the company,,, i.e. many think it's an anaerobic product,, straight from the tank is the idea here,,,not left sitting on a shelf for days before application

One of the best sites to help you understand Aerobic Teas is the North Country Organics site. The site is loaded with all of the basics and is the only site I am aware of that posts test results of biological content produced by their brewer and basic tea quality compost.

Soil soup produces a bacterial tea which is different than a compost tea (needs to have the fungal component)
Here's a good article on it: http://www.soilfoodweb.com/03_about_us/approach.html
Just click on the compost tea section!
