In Maine I went to a class given by a master gardener, sponsored by the Maine Dept. of agriculture. The class was how to compost using red worms. The instructor sold anyone who wanted to start a bin red worms for around 10.00. Maybe your state has a similar program.

Just go to forums on the link sct gave you...To posts down there is a "worm suppliers" post....it is really good....Don't get from "worm man"...I have heard a lot of bad things about them.

I got mine from my worm castings, I spent 4 hours and 20 min. picking the egg sacks out of 50lbs of castings that I got from D&D Ranch in little old Swisher Iowa. I don't know if they still sell castings?? As a kid some of my best times I had when we went creek fishing was kicking over cow pies and getting the little red worms to fish with. Would these be the same??

www.carolinapetsupply.com , i have used the red wigglers ef's, and the larger ones, eh's, the ehs eat tons more but reproduce a little slower. the site i listed send you adult worms, so they will be breeders when you get them, most of the other sites sell you bedrun worms which means usually the most of them are juveniles and will take around 6 weeks to start reproducing.

if the price is an issue, you can find them under things laying in yards and fields, rocks, boards , tarps. you can also dig them up, red worms dont bury very deep

Make sure you get the right species of worms if you want to do it right. It will make a huge difference in your success with vermicomposting. There's plenty of resources on the web if you google it.

What do you do w/ the kitchens scraps during the winter if your worms are outside? Do the worms "throw a fit" and stomp their feet if you make them go to the basement for the cold season?
