First-time pumpkin-er

Grove City Ohio

That's it in a nutshell. This is my first year with a real garden... and I want to try for a big pumpkin... 50-75lb min would be nice. I read a bit online and figured out how to start them... now I want to know what to do next, before they pop up out of the ground. Can anyone offer advice? Is there anywhere I can go in Ohio to meet some big pumpkin growers? Any advice is good advice... Thanks!

Go back to the MAIN MENUE and go to LINKS, there are two Ohio organizations/clubs. We use giant pumpkin seeds here, what kind and where did you get the ones you have planted? If you want just 50-75lbs, I think you still have plenty of time to get some seeds from growers here, just ask. SEED SOIL SUN & LUCK is what you need, you must also water and feed them. Also protect your plant from squash vine borers, they will kill your plant.

I'm a new grower, too. I joined the Southern Ohio GPG club this winter. You can find info about the club at this link:
http://www.sogpg.com/ Since you are located in the middle of the state, you might also be interested in the Ohio Valley GPG. http://www.ovgpg.com/ There are other clubs in Ohio as well, but I can't think of them right now. Hopefully someone else will reply and give you more information. I think there might be one pretty close to Columbus.

I attended a winter meeting this past year and both clubs have a picnic with patch tours in the summer. All that info is on the websites, I believe. Also on the SOGPG website is basic growing intructions you can print out.

I live about 2 hours SW from you, but you are more than welcome to come visit anytime and see my patch. I'm not an expert by any means, but I have learned some of the basics and would be more than happy to share what information I've learned with you. If you go to my diary and click the email link, you can find my email address.

Good luck to you,
Susan

First-time pumpkin-er, I am new to giant pumpkins but I have been growing pumpkins to sell before halloween for several years. If all you want is 50 to 75 lbs. I tried a variety called Big Max a couple of years ago that grew to that size. The largest being 87lbs. I found them at southern States. That was with no pruning or extra attention. Just planted them and left them till the first of October. Which ever seeds you planted, good luck.
