Tad, great to see you jump back into the board. Listen to Tad....I think he knows more about compost tea than the rest of us combined. I love your website info...you put great effort into sharing your knowledge. This year is a prep year for me...next winter I hope to do much research on making the best brew.

I use 3/4 HP transfer pump and get 4.5 gallons per minute uphill about 50 feet. Slap that on a couple pressure regulators and you got a patch full o' goodies. Got it after seeing Ron and all his "spwrenching"... Need couple brass fittings from box store to get it going on hoses as it'll be NPT.

What kind of filter bags do you use when brewing? I use "bubble bags" which are designed for making hashish, but are wonderful for squeezing out a brew mix. Can choose your micron size and everything for couple bucks!

400 micron is optimal for brewing teas if you have to use a bag for filtering particulate. Best is to brew without a bag though if possible.

I have used paint bags from the hardware store before for compost tea. Quick look says they are 100 micron...is that too fine or too big compared to 400 micron?

dustin...i think you were talking about water transfer pump...Tad was referring to air pump. I have used his air numbers for when I have brewed my 55 gallon drum brews. It took me more than one airpump to reach the cfm needed.

Paint strainers work fine in most cases. Yes I was referring to the filter bag for use when brewing. For transferring tea, a sump pump or pool transfer pump works great. 1 pass through an impeller style pump isn't a big deal but you can't brew with them.

We get our 400 micron bags from a local supplier. I can't remember the name off hand. I can dig it up if you want.

And yes no filter bag is best, provided you don't have any "dead zones" in the brewer design where the compost could just sit on the bottom. The key is to make sure it's constantly agitated.

It does make it harder to take the compost out, especially when it is something that has not composted already, without use of a bag.

We use to make our own compost for this, but now use Ronny's WOW brew instead. It seems to work well for us & no fussing around with different ingredients. Just throw the bag in & let the brewing process begin. We add other ingredients once the brew is finished to make sure we got all our bases covered.
