For master gardener qualification, I know that it can be a duo - eg Barlow and Jacobus... but do all 5 entries have to be on one site or can it be split between sites. A friend and myself would like to enter but don’t have enough room on my .17 acres to do it all in one spot. Thanks!

They do not have to all be grown on the same partial of land, but do need to be cared for equally by each grower if to be a TEAM.

9) Master Gardener – Awarded to the grower who has the best all-around showing in combined categories (Pumpkin, Squash, Long Gourd, Field Pumpkin, Watermelon, Tomato and Bushel Gourd). A minimum of 5 out of the 7 categories will be required, and will be based on the following points system: The first place specimen in each category will each receive an amount of points equal to the total number of entries among qualifying growers of the category with the largest number of entries. Each subsequent placing will be awarded one less point than the entry ahead of it. A grower’s total number of points will be the deciding factor of the award. In the event of a tie for first place of overall points, a winner will be determined the following way:

If a world record was broken in any category. If more than one finalist breaks a WR, it will go to the grower who broke the previous WR by the largest % margin
If no WR was broken, the win will go to the grower who reached closest to the existing WR in any category as a % of the weight or length of their best specimen.

Wiz----Are you saying Mr.Smith could grow 4 things at his house and Mr.Jones could grow 3 things down the road and they could be a legit team?

Yes Hank teams can win the master gardener award.
Wizzy, that doesn't make sense. I thought the GPC changed it so that they must be all grown in the same plot of land? If what you say is true, then that must mean that I could team up with Todd Kline or even John H.? As long as we spend the same amount of time in the patch, we're good to go?

The GPC Committee is reviewing all rules for clarification, updating, as we have done every year. We are discussing adding Marrow into the formula for Master Gardener award, but we will make the decisions as a committee at our Sunday meetings. Any and all changes for the growing year will be announced at the International Growers Convention then shared on BP for the growing season. Yes we have had teams included in the MG award > ie Glen and Margaret Martin...and others... GROW BIG

Jane & Phil I want to be on your team too We can do this via a virtual grow, I work in the patch and you watch then you work and I watch As long as we do it together right Hell I could team up with anyone then.

Here is the Team definition already in the GPC Rules:

“Team” is two growers contributing equally to the care of a fruit/vegetable grown at the same address and exhibited together.

This change was put in last year. We will also put it in the MG area. The Committee will decide about adding Marrows and how it fits into the formula....

I like the way you think Eddie! Why didn't you pick me to be on your team?
I certainly understand that teams have won before. Two people living under the same roof and growing together is not the same as two growers who live in different places combining entries.
Over the years, it has been around 30-40 people who qualify for the final list doing it by themselves. I always thought it was a huge accomplishment just to be on that list. It is not easy. By having teams it certainly will take something away from that.

Definition: Team is two growers contributing equally to the care of a fruit/vegetable grown at the same address and exhibited together.
This is directly from the GPC rules of a team definition.

If the Barlow and Jacobus entries are grown in the same patch and both provide care or if they have two patches at different address's and both provide equal care, I think both of those scenarios meet the intent and spirit of the team rule.

Perhaps they are roommates?

Good afternoon everyone, All GPC categories are included in the running for the Master Gardener award. Yes Marrow was included in the 2019 Master Gardener award. There were 47 growers who qualified for the MG award with entries in 5 or more categories. Twenty two of these growers had Marrow entries in 2019. Of the 22 who had Marrow entries Fred Ansems had the heaviest Marrow @ 163.0 lbs and received the top score of 47 points in the Marrow category.
