The only thing I don't understand is that every weigh-off site submits their results to the GPC. Yet, the GPC does not have a master list of HD winners every year. I would be happy to do it, if someone would give me access to the GPC files.

The GPC By Laws read that Officers and Board of Director may serve for Eight Years.
And serve and additional eight year term after a 4 years absence from the GPC

All I know is it appears they keep taking in more and giving out less. If value does not meet cost failure is inevitable. I would hope this is an unexceptionable outcome for all involved.

In 2018 and 2019 there was a Ten Thousand Dollar per year Increase for the New York City Trip. By the New Your Botanical Garden. $20,000
In 2019 and this year 2020 all prize money was cut out. I think it was about Fifteen Thousand per year. $30,000
The price is get into the Big Show when up $25 Dollars in Green Bay and up $50 Dollars in Vegas. At 150 people that is a Increase of $3,750 In Green Bay and $7,000 In Vegas.
I was never good at math in school but I think that adds up to "$61,750". I could be Wrong.
The Pumpkin Growing Community needs to know in detail where all this Money is going and who approved it.

Thank you for posting the link to the tax return, Bart!

I looked over their return covering 2019, and the GPC lists $73,790 in expenses for The Big Show, and $21,135 in income from The Big Show. So, The Big Show cost the GPC $52,655 overall last year.

It did not give any details as to how they spent the money other than "expenses and awards."

Have a nice day!

Everyone's has a Question for the GPC. What is your unanswered question?

2/27/2020 9:56:34 PM

spudder

Just a general observation from being on this site for 10+ yrs.
People should volunteer for the GPC positions if they do not think it is being run properly but be ready to take a lot of flak. Over the years I have learned from the site is that the people who are doing the job are the ones that do not know how to do it and the ones that know how it should be done are not volunteering to do it . Hmmmm
My question for the people who volunteer is "How many aspirins do you go through"

2/27/2020 10:15:52 PM

wile coyote

On a cliff in the desert

I am not accusing. I am asking for disclosure.

2/28/2020 1:10:55 AM

wile coyote

On a cliff in the desert

I've been in a leadership role in a volunteer organization and know how ungrateful people are. I wasn't bothered with many questions because I made sure everything was disclosed to anyone in the organization who wanted to see it like financial statements, event income statements, meeting minutes, etc.

2/28/2020 1:22:06 AM

spudder

Wile
Don't shoot me if I am wrong but I believe it was mentioned in at least one thread that there is a seed giveaway and or auction at the convention for attendees only.

I would suggest that after the convention is over and when the exec are home and unwound , that might be the time for people to ask questions in a civil way. But I would be willing to bet that their answers would probably be used as gossip in the offboard messaging. Attacking acts as a deterrent to people wanting to volunteer or post as you can see by the people who have stopped posting on this site and we all lose.
I do not know of any business that puts up their financial records to the public shows every single receipt. Those do have to be kept in case of an audit.

2/28/2020 7:38:35 AM

spudder

Wile.
Don't take it that you were attacking. If you go back through this site, you will see what I mean.

Great Reply Wile Coyote
All I am asking for is simple disclosure. Why is everything not out in the open. Like, did the GPC pay for the "Boots on the ground trips" One to Green Bay and Two to Vegas?
Why do we not get any National Exposure On TV. The Kelly and Ryan Show wants the the biggest pumpkins, watermelons and other fruit. I talk to Deloris Jackson, one of the producer from that show. They loved it when the Big One showed up. Who failed to follow up with them?
Why do we never see minutes of meeting?

People dont post comments.they dont like conflict.I have been attacked for many years on here for trying to do something different & make it more fun & interesting for new growers.I have been supported by a lot of growers behind the scenes. However they dont want to get involved on public forums.I know a lot of people currently concerned about the GPC & its future.Like I said before GREAT TEAM we have now. However the pres who steers the operation Im not so sure.I have been attacked framed & some very tacky & suspect attacks behind the scenes by him.I know a lot of great people are trying to keep things good behind the scenes.Sometimes a awareness needs to be created.Conflict can save the ship. Its all GOOD !!

I appreciate all the hard work GPC board members do. It's a thankless job. Giving them compensation as a free convention package is ok with me. Reimbursing them for out of pocket expenses for club business is ok.

What I would like to see is a password protected section on the GPC site that has financial statements, event income statements, meeting minutes, detailed cash and seed distributions, etc. People would get a password when they renew their membership with a GPC club. They would log in with their BP handle. People don't always remember what is posted on BP by the GPC board and that's where the problem is. This disclosure section on the GPC website would clear things up.

People don't volunteer because they don't want to. I've experienced that problem. I've told people that complained or made fun of the way things were done "if you think you can do a better job than what I do, then volunteer to do my role." and then the complaining ended.

As a past GPC committeeman, I can tell you that funds are spent as sparingly and as responsibly as possible. I spent 8 years in meetings for 2+ hrs every week, at least through most of the winter months, often missing family functions. The only compensation you get was your travel and accommodation covered to the convention. If you wanted to stay longer, that was at your own expense. Meals outside of the conference were at your own dollar. I agree that it is within our rights as growers and members of the GPC to ask for transparency and accountability, however i can assure you that the elected individuals of this organization are doing the very best they can to manage the funds they collect and deliver value to the members.
I would invite anyone that feels they can do a better job, to step up and let your name stand for election!

Just to clarify... although the GPC provides an HD ribbon it is NOT a GPC award and it is totally up to the site who it is awarded to. There is a box on the data sheet that can be keyed if it is an HD award but the data is not required to be reported and is not tracked. There is not a HD data base! This issue has been brought forward at the committee level and we’ve discussed about adding more fields but going back is impossible.

Ten years ago Dan Bowels president of the Wisconsin Club took over $5,000 of club money to fund a trip to the White House in Washington DC. He say the funds we accidentally taken out of the wrong account.
This almost caused the Wisconsin Club to Fail.

I have been reading this thread for a few days and have done my best not to get sucked in but i have to.I know committee members both past and present and they have all worked very hard and devoted personal time to the betterment of the hobby and the GPC. Glen , you and Bubba are a couple of shit stirrers with a hidden agenda ,and ,or sour grapes. Now you are insinuating that money is being stolen because someone allegedly stole money from your club? You were a rep for a while , you should know how hard they work. If people have issues or questions go to your rep or the committee as a whole to get answers not on BP just to cause problems.

Green Bay, Glen

Kaukauna, Wisconsin

George, Of course I am bitter after 10 years of Volunteer work. They have a secret meeting and I was kicked out of when I questioned them about where is money is going. We cut out the prize money. Three Boots on the Ground trips, One to Green Bay, Two to Vegas. Three extra days in New York City for the past three years at the Grand Wyatt $450 per day. We have hotel bills for the seminar that start on Tuesday and go until Sunday, $100 plus per night. Airline tickets 3 times to New York, 2 times to Green Bay and now 3 times to Vegas $400 per trip, The Flamingo Hotel is twice the money of what it going to cost when we come to New England next year. So, my question still is where’s the money going. How did the previous committees do so much more with less revenue to fund the seminar and prize money? I did talk to every committee member in Green Bay about why they kicked me out. Everyone gave me the same answer. Go talk to the one you have the problem with. I got nothing but the run around. By the way Dan Bowels put a pumpkin on display at the White House and he told us our club should pay his way to promote the sport of Giant Pumpkin growing.

2/29/2020 9:52:01 AM

Ma.

Well Glen, as far as I know , and I am not privvy to all the info, but the GPC lost a considerable amount of income when RTI no longer sponsored the club. I would assume that's why prize structure etc. was changed.i would assume also the trips to NY were funded by the Botanical garden. All I do know is the committee works hard and as most things of this nature it is a thankless job. I have no issue with GPC funding the trips to the seminar for the days of the seminar. I would expect any extra days would be on their own dime.As far as the white house trip wouldn't your club vote on something like that? Was he the president and the treasurer? I would also assume that any rule changes will be presented at the seminar. Vegas is very expensive now , not like years ago.
Hopefully alot of your questions will be answered after the seminar.

No one should be voted out for questioning expenses but it would have been better to bring this up in december so there would be less undermining of the good people/ efforts. . . if there is any rot well we are pumpkin growers we know how to react... try to treat it... Just the affected area, right... not smash the whole pumpkin. I dont think this is the kind of rot where the bottom falls out when you lift it. Get any rot cleaned up and put a fan on it, not on the flames.

When you volunteer,
Your volunteering both your time and money. I have been involved with several non profits and I knew there was going to be a certain out of pocket cost. Transportation, food and lodging. Remember all your expense for being a volunteer are deductible on your Taxes. Here in Wisconsin when we have a seminar. Everybody pays there own way. Including the members working the seminar. IRS rules say Individual members or leaders can’t benefit financially from the program and activities of the organization.

Responding back >

Boots on the ground > The only expense submitted to the GPC for boots on the ground was airfare and one night hotel. All food/alcohol/parking/other expenses I pay for myself. Same was true for Vegas Boots on the ground > GPC billed for hotel stay of two days. No Airfare paid for. Woody paid for his entire stay, at no expense to the GPC. There were no multiple Boots on the Ground for any event. The Boots on the ground is necessary and will continue as we want no surprises for our events, the growers deserve a top notch event. Sizes of rooms, ammenties, A/V setup, Food negotiations / contract reviews in person accomplishes a lot.

New York > There are no extra days. Business only. I need to fly in on Tuesday to be available on Wednesday when the pumpkins land. Same for Sunday > I see off all the other folks making sure they make their connections and all loose ends wrapped up, NYBG Happy. NYBG event ends at 5:00PM Sunday. With a four hour + flight, getting into Denver at 3 AM and then driving 65 miles home is not something I will do. Oh and since I am a contractor, anytime off I take is work with out pay. So I have sacrificed pay to make our events happen. At times Nasdaq lets me work 12 hour days to compensate, it helps but I still end up with the shorter stick.

Kelly & Michael Show > This event was put on hold until they start to support the GPC. They want the biggest pumpkin but we dont always get that, or even know ahead of time. They only allow two GPC people to watch. Wont put up our GPC banner or even note us. The GPC puts this on, so why should we not be recognized. We may bring it back, as they are starting to negotiate which they did not do in the past. Getting the chosen pumpkin to them a day earlier was not worth the difficulties unless they come thru to promote all growers in the GPC. And who do we choose to go on when its not even their pumpkin? Ongoing.

GPC Meetings > As a refresher, The GPC Committee votes on all major changes. Each region gets one vote. Only the GPC Committee Regional Reps Vote, Jack and Cindy are not regional reps. The Head Potato is the moderator and only votes in case of a tie. Its been that way forever. I have yet to cast any vote in the last two years. At the end of the day, we as a committee move on supporting the new voted on issue, even though perhaps it was not unanimous, we support the decision agreed on by the committee. Any grower can submit emails/suggestions to their regional rep. which will make it up to the committee for discussion. BP is not the proper forum for that. Since this thread started there has not been one email to the committee for clarification, and I find it very sad that two growers spit false information, and post in such a manner with no concern for accuracy, decency and facts.Fake News..... BP is not the New York Times, or CNN. Our growers deserve better!

Finally got to the point where action had to be taken. We on the Committee are a team. There is no room for rogue members that dont honor our Committee quorum voting processes. And go SOLO.
The vote was unanimous. If one needs a reason, only look to the above attacks to see why. Glen was informed as to why via phone calls several times. We have moved on, and hope Glen can as well.

This Committee works very hard, is selfless, fair, honest, with top integrity. I have been on great committees with great people that have accomplished a lot. Anyone could see in Vegas that we are a team of professionals that do it all for our growers and not for ourselves. There are no secrets, only hard working volunteers, the only profit we receive is the Thank You's from our growers, and that means a lot to us. GROW BIG

I would encourage the GPC to get any giant pumpkin or squash on the Kerry Ryan show that there Willing to air.Not getting the Geddes pumpkin on there was a step in the wrong direction for our hobby.I appreciate the thankless work the GPC is doing but the Hobby is #1,The GPC should always respect that.

The decision to hold back was made right after the Holland pumpkin went, as they treated us badly, I was VP at the time. We simply asked for a banner across the bottom on the screen letting watchers know if they are interested in learning how to grow giant fruits and vegetables to visit www.BigPumpkins.com for more info. Now I believe that is in best interests for the hobby. They are now coming around so maybe this year... All we need is a top pumpkin and its grower, and it has to be there by noon on Wednesday, not always possible but we try. Amen

That was not too much to ask for. I will complement the GPC on its' efforts and the way I have seen it handle the flack on this board the last couple of years.
