Hello all,

So I only have room to grow one main plant and one pollinator plant that gets culled after I use it to pollinate the larger plant to make more room. So it needs to be a proven seed. I am not super picky on color just can’t be mostly white (I.e no 1928 Daletas) (at least some orange / peach / salmon). I am more picky on a nice shape (so no asymmetrical bonafide alien blobs). Wondering what would be the best seed for me to grow (and cross) to give me the best shot at achieving 2k while still looking like a pumpkin and (without breaking the bank so unfortunately no 1885 or 2183).

Thanks everyone! .

A lot of seeds will reach your goal For 2000 Far as shape that’s not 100 percent on a Atlantic giant especially at 2000 pounds gravity and weight combined is not on your side for shape and you will see more white kins reach 2000 before orange. Starting to se more 2000 pounders from orange than before 2350 not a bad choice

In defense of the 1928 Daletas it has thrown a couple of beauties but yes the odds are much lower. I would actually like to grow a smooth paper white one but the dingy white ones arent my thing either.

I agree the 2350 is a good bet. 2261 Schmit is right up there, probably nearly as good?

1806 Sperry maybe or the 1747.5 Handy might be fun ones to try.

2015 Ford... a guaranteed orange kin?

...If you are on a budget there are certainly other worthy seeds that will be available for less than the 2350.
The top seeds usually go for $100+ and good seeds often priced at around $50. So yes you have to think outside the box a bit if you want to spend less or keep an eye on the auctions... some seeds will drop in price... others wont.

I was originally thinking 2005 haist x 2350.

But 2005 Haist would be really pushing the bigger limit. Will there be one available in auctions this year (well next year lol).

I gave 2350 a real thought but since it is pretty heat sensitive I am afraid where I am growing (last growing season it was 105 in early June) that it will burn to a crisp. Totally open to using it as a pollinator though.

I did not have significant heat issues with my 2350. It would be a solid choice. 1686 Stelts would be one to look at too. Proven to grow big and has always gone heavy.

I cant imagine pulling a 2350 up... Maybe a friend/grower nearby has space to grow a 2350 and you could use their male flowers.

You could consider either the 2112 Skinner or the 1810 Werner. While they could be getting a bit hard to find this year, both seeds have been priced very competitively for their production and have grown some nice big orange pumpkins.

I also wouldn't sweat it if you can't make a cross in your plot. It's not a bad idea to start with 2 plants in case something happens to 1, but once your favorite starts rolling it's hard to put too much effort into the pollinator and just to pull it.

If you check out the 2021 results on the GPC page anything is capable of 1900 plus.

Gritty’s garden: It’s really sad but I am really one of less than a handful of giant pumpkin growers in western SD.
