Our club has lost some seeds to customs, Can we use the permit for "small lots of seeds" it sounds like it should work and is free as far as I have read. Just wondering why I haven't heard talk of it.

Henry, I believe the "small lot of seeds permit" only applies to the import of seeds. If you are saying that your club has lost seeds that were mailed to other countries than it would not help in those situations.

I am very, very leery of sending overseas these days, having lost some very valuable auction seeds in customs, not just last year, but previous years as well. When an auction recipient emails me and says their lot(s) did not arrive and asks for a refund, I have to take their word for it and refund out of good faith. I don't want our club receiving any bad rap.

I have tried disguising the contents as something else, but it always seems to be a crap shoot. This year in our auction rules, terms, and conditions, I am going to ask that each overseas winner provide specific instructions as to how to proceed in getting their seeds to them.

I have had success in recent years by declaring garden supplies rather than seeds. Still truthful and much less likely to be confiscated. Tracking is the best way to go. Many times even the basic service will tell you if it arrives. I always keep my receipts until they are delivered.

sgeddes is correct. The small lot of seeds permit is only for importing into the United States. I have used it for the past 15 years to successfully 'import' seeds from several countries. (never lost a seed)AS for why haven't you heard about it ...there have been post about this method since 2005 or 2006

I was importing seeds, after reading more I found that the exporter should put a copy of my small lots of seed permit in with the seeds and then mail it to a USDA inspection office. What I understand after that the exporter has to have a phytosanitary certificate so my permit really isn't doing anything
