Last year I had an abundance of cucumber beetles, a few SBV's flying around, and several squash bugs. In addition I had a infestation of aphids for a week or so.

My spraying regiment included frequent doses of neem oil, occasion doses of Daconil, a few doses of Imidacloprid, and some insecticidal soap. All in spray applied. This year I'm planning on applying granular Merit at the beginning of season. What are some other pesticides and procedures I should use/implement?

for a fungicide use Daconil once per week. Use imidacloprid for SVB and corn seed maggots. I use Bifen IT weekly for everything else except Mites

What about Merit granular? That's kind of what I was planning to hopefully nail some cucumber beetles and SVB's that may be in the ground.

Merit is not a contact pesticide and the bugs have to eat the plant.

VTW - I think Merit kills grubs/larvae in the ground too. That's why I was going to apply it before the cucumber beetle larvae and SVB larvae emerge. Am I wrong? I know it's systemic too but I think it kills in the soil as well.

As far as fungicides go, I like Daconil. It worked well for me last year. The only thing I'm not sure about is that it leaves a white residue on the leaves. I wonder if that residue interferes with foliar feeding in any way???

PS---NOT disagreeing, but if any of your insecticide has LIQUID Imidacloprid in it, cuke beetles will be killed within a minute or two as though a contact method, so I have used some 'Complete' Crop Science brand dual action that has Imidacloprid AND another item in with it - Blue, 1-qt. bottle that is 1 tbsp./gal for overhead watering type - no time now, but can name it later---kills bees, too, sorry! eric g

When do you think it's safe to do an initial Imidacloprid application?

I saw this question on a 2005 post but it deserves a more current answer. Does Merit (imidacloprid) kill earthworms?

For me, my plants were about 6-8 feet long and it was long before any flowers came about, but only AFTER tons of pinholes in my leaves were evident and there were squash bugs staring me down from the main stem, lol - I just had not gotten any product yet is why the delay; They were gone and never returned by the next day, and yet the cuke beetles will be back once you forget about them, months later - I always feel sorry for squash bugs, as they are so slow-moving and I essentially put that feast out there for them. I'd like to know (maybe the label says) how long the foliar spray type stays in the plant as opposed to the granular - maybe identical;

Bio-Advanced COMPLETE 40 oz. with Imidacloprid and B-Cyfluthrin like .72/.38%
(going by memory, lol---prolly wrong, lol)
is MY product. Hope this helps--eg

All good info! Though we may have to have the state of Ohio classified as a "Superfund" cleanup site. LOL. Dibble, that's a great schedule, but do you apply all of that as a precaution, regardless of what you see in the patch? Your right - that's a lot of $ too!

Ppal - I too fought the Cuc beetles more than once, but felt no remorse the squash bugs I crushed. Never look them in the eyes Ppal, never. LOL

The merit will kill juvenile squash bugs, aphids and cucumber beetles as they feed on the plant.They work great in combination with a contact insectacide to keep your numbers down the next year. They also kill bees and gardeners if precautions arent taken.

I disagree with the comment that cuke beetles will be killed within a minute if there is liquid Imidacloprid present. It’s a “revenge” kill and works later after ingested. Contact sprays work immediately given correct dosage for target insect.

Look into Cyonara. Between Bifen, Imidacloprid and Cyonara you got it covered.
