I've got 4 plants and 4 backups. My two 1760 Uhlmeyers popped up first and are going strong. Of the two 2191 Uhlmeyers, one did not germinate at all and the other one looks like crap. Both had a little mold/mildew on them when I got the. Dont know if that's a factor. Both the 2365 and 2200 wolf look great as does a single 2416 Haist. Lastly the 2517 Mendi is up with one pretty deformed Cot and not terrible looking, but not nearly as nice as Both 1760's, the Wolfs and the Haist. My Original plan was to plant a 1760,2191, 2365, and 2517. What would you do??

I would plant a good plant by a not so great one. Give them 3 weeks and let the plants tell you which one is the best.

I usually go with the ones that I wanted to grow the most. In a few months time a slow start or a deformed cot should be long forgotten

I also pick the seed that I want to grow most and stick with it, barring some early obvious defect.

Were growing pumpkins not plants.Keep that in mind before you pull "Son of Lebron James" cause the other plant is "nicer".

Ideally, grow the vines out to 5 ft or more before culling. Its kinda rare, but some growers have even grown the plants out to 10-12 ft before culling, at which point they can see the baby pumpkin or squash. This requires more work and space, but its probably smart.

Well if "son of Lebron James" is a Dwarf then he gets pulled! LOL
I like the idea of planting side by sides for this purpose. I think I'll try that. How far apart on the mound would you plant them?

How far apart depends on the size of the space you have. Most growers start early in a small hut so then maybe they can only be a couple feet apart. But some growers have a large greenhouse all prepped so there is a lot more space. I'd say whatever your space allows.

I've started several but the best two plants so far are the 2007 Urena and the 2003 Haist. I guess that means if I cross them, I'll get two 2005 pumpkins! I wish....

I might yank my backup plant around backwards, and use it just as a pollen source. Also I could tissue test the backup plant rather than sacrificing any early growth off the keeper. Just a couple of my ideas.
