If you have persistent soil disease, would landscaping cloth be a plus? If you are sterilizing your tools after each use would the same logic apply to cloth that is in contact with the dirt.

One thing is for sure, if a handful of elite pumpkin growers adopt this method it will become the norm.

This is the first year I have tried the weed mat. I will be burning small holes for the bottom roots only (no top roots). I will not be burying any vines and will be relying on bottom roots only. I am aware of many positives and negatives of this decision, BUT I have a theory and high hopes that this will work out very well, but only time will tell, I could be back to burying vines next year....

Growing on landscape fabric is not tohard. If it is the woven type you can poke through it with a blunt object and make an opening in the weave of the cloth. The biggest down side was with dry weather ir was hard to get any roots. It may require overhead watering to help that along. Also in hot weather tip burn is more of a problem.
