Had to make a trip out of town for 5 days. When I came back I got caught up on all of my vine bury duties. When I cam to the last of four plants I found that he main vine had split about 10 inches past the stump, 4 inches on either side of a leaf node. The plant is still doing great and the split was healed. since it was right at the first leaf stalk coming off the main I decided just to bury the entire split and get some roots growing there. Anyone have any experience with this? What should I expect.

Splits a pretty common especially growing outdoors.
I personally would not bury the split. I would keep it dry, put a fungicide on it, and let it scar up. It will grow a big scar usually too.

It seemed like it was pretty dried out. I was concerned that the open hole at each end looked like a "door" for something to crawl in and start eating. That's the reason I buried it. I could uncover it easily I guess and hit it with some Daconil.

Daconil is amazing stuff.

You want to keep it dry.I,d make some sort of canopy to keep rain and waterings from getting into the hollow of the vine. They can heal up with or without dirt there. Constant wetness may cause it to rot.

Gar, hopefully it is a parallel split with the vine?
Dry is key especially until it gets the big scar knobs up. I built little a-frames using two boards at a 90 degree angle and leave over vine for the year. The are cut pretty close to the ground so rain cannot get in, but up enough for air flow.
This is just my experience, we get pretty hot and humid, so disease is a constant battle.

Thanks to all for the advice. I'm planning to cover all stumps over the next day or two. Fortunately the split is in an area that will fall under the cover too.

Stumps?…I dunno as I would cover the stumps…just double checking. Or is this something new?

Agree with Pork, make sure whatever you do there is airflow. My reference was to keep rain out of the split itself.
