Had a 1 foot long split on the main vine that laid wide open like a water trough and new leaves past this area were showing a flagging. It was located half way on a 12 foot vine and I decided to tear out the plant! Now having second thoughts on doing so. Was there anything that could have been done?

Yup. And read as much on this site as you can. Ask questions before , not after. Just ribbing you!

The flagging might be temporary. Maybe just needs a couple days to heal. They're good at healing. There's been a lot of discussion about using secondaries. It depends what your goal is but presumably you had some secondaries or tertiaries that could have grown a pumpkin. A secondary just a node or two prior to the split area might have been a good choice.

Let me add that some noteworthy pumpkins have been grown on plants with vine damage. I think Joe Jutras grew one of his top squash/pumpkins on one such plant.

You could of tried pruning the plant at the start of the split.Turning one of the secondaries as a new main.

The plant was wilting on a overcast day with it in the 60s & the insects were crawling in & out and the split ran from leaf to leaf with an already small split that was trying to heal with help from Captan prior to this split. Trust me I didn't want to do it!

A split with the grain of the vine doesn't hurt anything, I would say you had something else going on with the plant to cause the flagging. Probably something to do with the insects

I originally buried a split in my main about 2 foot down from the stump. Taking Andy's advice I uncovered it. I cleaned it up using clean water in a pump sprayer, then sprayed it down with a mixture of Daconil, Alcohol, and water then covered it up with a small board to keep it dry. It's healed up, scared over and has had zero affect on plant growth thus far.

Dry as a bone and healed over in four days. I forgot to mention I have a fan running on the stump 24/7 which also blows on the split.
