The growing tips on all of my secondaries below the 10’ mark have turned yellow and died. What could be the cause? I have done 2 applications of Bayer tree and shrub for vine borers. My current theory is that this may have been too much for the plant. We have had record heat here in the southeast, and the plant basically stopped growing during the heat wave. What is particularly puzzling is that the growing tip of the main is fine. Any thoughts?

Growth tips are super sensitive. I think you answered your own question. Protect all tips from the sun and heat. Good luck. Jim

So it was more likely the heat than the Bayer tree and shrub?

Isn't Bayer Tree & Shrub for pouring on at the tree root with specific instructions " not for spraying". I doubt heat would have caused that. If it's the same product I looked at, i.e. 12 months of systemic protection with fertilizer added it's probably way to strong for pumpkins. We've had some hot days here in SW PA too with no affects like your describing.

I didn’t spray it. It was applied at the stump.

I’ve found spray-on insecticides to be ineffective against borers. It has to be systemic or it just won’t do the job.

Your main has alot more water uptake going for it than your secondaries until they establish the taproots and can fend for themselves. I would think that's why your main vine tip wasn't harmed.

All - my last recollection from years ago was that Imidacloprid was, was, was ineffective against SVBs but somewhere along the way it became all the rage. ? Also, I've been saying for a long time that folks need to follow directions on the labels of products rather than use something that is labeled for anything ELSE and then custom-fitting it for pumpkins due to availability. Yeah, I must be guilty of some things related but I forget what, lol---NOT directing THAT at YOU , 'KM, but perhaps now a serious straight-water drenching on a daily basis is needed to maybe, I say maybe, counteract any imbalance of the plant's(s') status and meanwhile, look for 'secondaries stopped growing' in the Site Search window on the home page for other remedies. Any pictures? yellow vine disease usually shows up in different parts of the plant. One part will show wilt and be yellow and another part of the plant will look healthy.

Once you have yellow vine disease in your patch and it becomes an issue, you see it every where and every year.
