Does anyone apply sulfur powder to freshly pruned vines to prevent fungus/rot?

People use to pack the wounds with this powder. Those days are over because they realized the rot would just come back. A light dusting after cleaning a bad spot isn't bad though.

Here's an idea -
Whatever anyone thinks is good followed by a coating of Flex-Seal, lol -
Why the Hell not?
You wouldn't put Neosporin on a cut and leave it open...
Don't do it, Andrej butt to peel it off a month later and see whazzup would be cool, lol...
Do not try, and I never ever use anything on any severed anything - I just make sure to make a notch at the bottom to drain any rain.
The sap coagulates and dries up just as blood would from me. I have 90% of a can left...do they make GREEN? eg

I agree with SoCal. When applied in excess when it gets wet I have found it can somewhat damage plant tissue, which is the opposite of healing, but a light dusting is ok. Beware, it will want to dust you too, its nasty clingy stuff, imho.

Miracle-Gro; I had been abbreviating it and like to have spelling and abbreviations as accurate as possible, just because. Then I spelt FS incorrectly, lol. That's the long answer. Truth is that I love seeing a cover crop in place, unifying what is there to be dealt with instead of my potpourri of 900 different plants, some getting to 7 feet high. One of my patches is now pumpkinless so I can get right into the CC mode of things there, as you are. (Cover Crop, lol)---eg

I thought maybe it could be Miller Lite or Gin and Tonic. lol Theses abbreviations have become so standard, I have to ask my kids what stuff means sometimes... Must mean I'm getting old.;) This abbreviation thing must drive english teachers nuts!

Ok, now I get it. I am clearly not an acronym person when not in context.

Lol---I realize I should not do most of the unique abbreviations that I do, and I have even (almost) used the word 'weigh' in place of 'way' in otherwise-important actual contexts! Funny that the word 'abbreviations' should itself be abbreviated, huh? lol---eg

This thread is a good example of why people don't post much anymore on bp.com. Andrej asked a legitimate question about whether sulfur can be used to prevent fungus/rot.

...and the question got answered pretty well. Did you have a suggestion for Andrej? Don't worry - these minor afterburns fizzle out after a day or two, and it's all good. Sorry to be a nuisance to you. eg and others

It is a waste of my time again when I see NEW comments about sulfer usage....then chit chat. I am having problems right now and would like more sulfer comments. But alas, another thread killed.

Thanks Hank,, its been an interesting read on the boards this year. I usually don't have time to check bp during the growing season if I'm growing. This year I've had plenty of time.

Daconil is the miracle/wonder drug in my experience, unless there's some reason you specifically need to use sulfer.

I stopped using sulfur to treat wounds. My go-to is Zerotol 2.0 (diluted). Treat it, put a fan on it and watch it dry out.
I don't mind painting a good layer of Daconil but I haven't used that technique since I started using Zerotol.

I will second Daconil, you can paint it on. I let it dry and keep a fan on it if the wound is big enough. Plus the white coating will change colors if the rot appears again underneath.
Maybe it is the humidity here, but sulfur tends to goop up on me like dough especially if the plant is leaking.

Thanks. I have a lg with a small leaking crack after we had some thunderstorms. I put sulfer in it last week to stop it. Then I read this thread. I took a picture of the spot, and zoomed in on it. Sure enough any place where I had applied sulfer had a black margin. It was eating away the edge which I could not see without enlarging! The unapplied spots on various gourds were healing better. No black. Sulfer was only on for two days. So I washed all the sulfer off and stuck a little fan on it. I decided to let the juice do its job and plug the spot naturally. It is dried over now after a few days. Do you think daconil directly on the spot is a good idea? I have painted it on stuff before so I think it should be fine on the gourd itself. What do you think? Thanks for all your help. Without this thread I would have probably lost that gourd!

I am a big fan of the daconil and a fan for drying/healing but I am thinking of trying out KC's method in the future. Zero tol doesn't leave a toxic residue as far as I know. Daconil has to be cleaned up before a weigh off. I have used a slightly diluted daconil to spray in area that the straight would not sink into. I have seen some amazing things. Healing up stem splits that way.

I learned the straight daconil trick from the late Brooks Bosworth years ago, he said there were times he would dump strong daconil and water around the base of the pumpkin to be sure to keep that unprotected pumpkin bottom safe. I have never gone that far....yet. LOL

Hank, I have put Daconil everywhere on plants, stems, leaves, and the pkn skin itself. No issues.

Exactly on point Tom K and HankH, thanks for pointing that out. While I am certainly not a heavy hitter, I don’t post many questions on here anymore and will just email one of my mentor/advisors that I trust. The guessing game and abbreviation game is simply a waste of time.
Sulphur power? Yes I’ve used it to dry things out and has worked great for me, I’ve even added water to make a paste that spreads on easily. Be aware that you will need to wash away and clean the sulphured area before you take the pumpkin to Weighoff.
Good luck AndreJ, I hope you find a great mentor that you can go directly to, a shame this crap still persists on big pumpkins . Com.
