I was talking with my melon growing friend Jake Holloway and he mentioned that he monitors for brix on some of his competition plants. He mentioned how higher brix values can impart disease and insect resistance as well as other positive traits. In a post about late season fertilization Ruben mentioned brix too. I had heard about brix but had no idea it had other uses than just indicating how sweet the fruit will be when you eat it. This has sparked my curiousity about using brix as a tool in the garden with our giant vegetables. What are you using it for and how are you using it?

I use it to monitor the Ca level.

How does brix connect to Ca? That would be very helpful...

ps bigmoon... I'm not using a brixometer but I have used them in the past for judging honey. They're easy to use (for judging honey anyhow).

When viewing the sample if the sample is blurred Ca is present in the sap. Correlates with the tissue and sap test results.

This is something that we need to learn more about for sure. Any one else use it?

Don Young, what do you know about this? Is it the same type of sap testing?
