I see this website updates the new pumpkin world records but the world record watermelons haven't been updated since 2010.
Are we the watermelon growers not important enough to post our champion growers when a new record is broken?
Chris Kents 350 grafted and bill Edwards 316 non-grafted should be posted.
Just my 2 cents worth

I am sure Ken D will get around to updating the watermelon record soon. But there is no separate class for non grafted melons. Bill is one of the best growers in the world, but the GWG club is the only organization I know of that has created a separate class for melons grown from non grafted plants. Unfortunately it is an ongoing controversy.

I do give Bill a huge amount of credit. That's a huge jump forward. Anymore it doesnt really matter what the GWG does. They are not the be all, end all authority on what is considered the world record. There just a fun loving growers club. The controversy anymore is what we make out of it. Beauty of it is that the watermelon community is coming off it's best year ever and the future is still wide open.

What effect will there be to planting a grafted melon over a non-grafted melon. Do you expect that the grafted melon will inherit some disease resistance or do you believe it will have inherited extra size producing ability or do you believe that the 350 Kent for example will (Heaven Forbid) fail to grow as large a fruit without re-grafting the plant in the next year? I am interested as to what people believe will happen. Both of the watermelon mentioned are fantastic. The 350 Kent and the 316 Edwards!

The 350.5 has the 291 Kent genetics in it.Nothing has changed that.I think the grafting made the fruit 10% bigger but I cant prove it.The 291 Kent was my favorite seed prior to the new world Record.I can prove that ask Jason Gfeller.I drove to his house 270 miles to get a seedling.I love to go out on a limb,so here I am LOL!I will grow the 350.5 this year Traditional style.Well lets call it Bubba style.I also will grow my 260.5 The second hottest seed out there in my humble(lol) Opinion.Dont be surprised if you see Smokey Mtn Pumpkin biting his nails come October!!lol

From what I have read, it is thought that grafting helps to prevent some dieses, it can also help with better root system giving the melon plant more nutrients to grow bigger.
Now if you could take the same 291 and find a way to have a better root system, I.E. Make it's roots grow bigger and stronger then the same size can be achieved without grafting, A good example is the 316 Edwards, that was a perfectly grown traditional melon.
Would Chris Kents 350 have gotten that big without grafting, based on the high level skilled grower that Chris is, I would say it still might have gotten that big anyway.
All that matters in the end is, how you grew it but how big did it get.
Everybody love's Big Melons.
