I know it doesn't take too much thinkin but I would like to know what you veteran Melon Heads use for your growing containers early on and what size for melon plants grafted or not. I've started to take out plants and need to get them in transfer containers and am curious what you all use...hardly any mention or pics of em in the diarys. Heres a Plant that needs to go into something bigger as I type this but I only want to transfer it once before it hits dirt. One gallon black plastic nursery containers have always worked well for me.

Do they get very rootbound in the 1 gallon containers? I hope to get these in the ground in about 3-4 weeks Thanks

Use two one gallon pots, cut one in half long ways place two halfs down inside another pot, fill with potting mix. When ready to transplant pull inside pot out pull apart two pot halfs and transplant, very easy does not disturb roots.

1 gallon pot is plenty big enough for melons.If you getting bigger then 1 gallon there in the pots to long.

hey i have been very sucessful at growing AG's in 5 gal. pots for 30 days without any transplant shock at all !!! my vines will be 12-18 inches long and bigining to branch before i even transplant them into the ground ! i do what farmer ben said, i cut the bottom out first, then i cut the pot in half and then retape it together overlaping the sides about one inch each side making the pot a little smaller so that the bottom pice can lay loosely on the bottom before adding the dirt. but before adding the dirt, you will wont to line the pot with newspaper first, so when it is time to transplant, the root ball does not fall apart when you pull the tape off the sides and pull the sides appart !!! without the news paper holding the rootball together, the dirt will fall apart and cause root damage. i dont have a diary to show you, but if you send me your e-mail i can send you some pictures on from my cell phone from last spring showing you how big and healthy the plants were. i grew my pumpkins in a cold frame so they were every bit as strong as those grown out doors in mini greenhouses. contact me ckon56@sbcglobal.net love to chat with you on your grafting tomatos to ag's never thought you could do that.

I like the Idea of split pots and I believe i'll line them with news papers to help hold em together...heck I think I did that last season..Oldtimers settin in,lol. Thanks Folks for your input and advice.

3,4 or 5 gallon pail, lid on, upside down, bottom cut out
take the cut out and put inside
put in your potting mix, plant/replant
when transplanting take lid off, hold cut out in pail
set pail in patch hole, slide out the cut out sideways
slide pail up! no shock use for anything you want

I used the upside down 5 gallon pail method last year. Used 1/8 plywood for a cut out. Works Great.

I use two gallon nursery pots. When they are ready to translant I take out my knife and cut them in half to remove.
