Subject: soil under your plastic

I'm wondering since folks put plastic& most don't cut hole for what little the vines root out .how important is it to make sure the soil is good.with exception of root ball zone

If you use plastic you may want to use irrigation under the plastic as it can create a huge dry zone your roots will not like.

Yes, melon roots can run out a surprising long way from the stump.
