Hi,

My watermelon is wilting VERY badly, the whole plant has gone limp, though the stem is still fairly stiff. The plant was setting out its second true leaf. The temperatures were fine, ive been watering daily, and I do not think that ive overdosed anything, as ive baisically only used seaweed every week at one fl. Oz. In 2 gallons, and watered about 2 pints of that around the plant. What is wrong with the plant? I do not have a back up frowing because i started 3 seeds for one patch, and only one of them germinated, so i think that i am in serious trouble. The plant looked fine a few fays ago. Thanks!

Ashton, too much water would be my guess based on what you are telling us. I bet if you were to pull the plant up you would see all brown roots and even the stem will be rotting beneath the soil line. Let it dry out, just ignore the plant and don't give it any more water. I have seen them come back from severe cases of damping off. (like yours)

Ashton, how well does your soil drain ? If you have plenty of organic matter in your soil and plant in a raised mound or hill it becomes almost impossible to over water. If your drainage isn't good, the roots of your young watermelon plant won't get the oxygen they require to grow and they will die. Good drainage is essential to grow healthy giant watermelon plants.

If your plant was diseased, you might want to figure out what
you need to do or use to prevent this from happening again.Do you have a disease prevention program ?

Yes I have a disease preventing program but until about 1 1/2 months after planting I just use companion. The plant is dead now, but I have a new batch started.

Muddy Waters

Another common mistake is overfeeding a plant.Lets say your fertilizer calls for 1 teaspoon to 1 gallon of water.That gallon is to be applied over 10 square feet area.What is commonly done by newbies is dumping that in a 2 foot square.Overferts will kill a melon quicker then anything.Melons are kinda of like Ma Ma Bubba.There more sensitive then KinS.
