I keep telling myself I think I know enough to raise a competitive melon this year. All I have do do is make the right decisions based on what I already know to do and with a little help from the weatherman I can do well. But I will have to be a little more methodical and organized. This afternoon I went out to look at my plants and spotted at least a dozen cucumber beetles chewing on my plants. Of course they are gone now but to be really good at something a person has to be proactive. On a good note I have been making good use of my fungicides already and doing other good things for my plants but no good excuse for a looming infestation of insects. Anyway I resolve to do better and suggest to anyone reading this to step back on a regular basis and think what it is you can be doing to keep headed toward your goal. There are so many factors involved, I just want to laugh sometimes when a spectator at a weigh-off asks how they manage to grow that big.

Right seed, right soil, right weather and few bugs.
