Does the 'opposite first true leaf' theory hold true for vine direction on watermelon like it does pumpkins?? First year with a 'real' watermelon. I'd like to not kill it.

Yes, it is the same for watermelon plants and probably for all cucurbits.

A lot of growers plant in the middle of the area they give the plant so with that approach it does not really make a difference what way the plant lays down and the melon vines are easy to train if u do need to send it a different direction

There was also a seed "air hole" theory too, now if I could only remember which it was. You could determine which direction the vine would run depending on the side of the seed the air hole was on.
