How do you tell the difference? Do the finger vines appear later on the stump? I have a couple of vines very close to the seed leaves forming while the main is only 9" long. I assume those are the first secondaries? Are there any other distinguishing features of a "finger" vine?

I believe a finger vine is a vine that branches off of the main vine or secondary vines. I believe Chris Kent coined the term "finger" vine so he could probably better explain exactly what it is. I think I remember him saying that he grown some big melons on finger vines.

Finger vines come off the stump. If a vine is off the main it is a secondary.

Hi Charles, I can't grow in my backyard anymore due to a groundhog invasion I have been unable to control. I have a raised bed at the side of my front yard with enough room for one plant. I may try to grow a pumpkin this year.But as far as I can tell I will be moving to the Philippines sometime early next year to help my wife care for her recently orphaned niece and nephew and her elderly mother. I don't believe I will be able to grow giant vegetables in the tropics but it might be fun trying a time or two.Sometimes family has to come first.

Spence are you of the opinion that a bigger melon is possible grown from a finger vine than some where down the main vine structure?

All I made last year was pears on the main of one so went to finger vine andand one on main was 224.00 Plant right next to it on finger vine was 224.66 So that will just make you puzzle things even more

Thanks Spence! At the very least I suppose your example highlights the fact that the fruit with the greatest growth potential may not appear where we would expect the ideal sink spot on the plant to be located.

If your at lower elevations and your temps are close to mine, it gets really hard to pollinate a melon after July 4th. A good rain event or frozen water bottles can help though.
