please post your OTT numbers for DAP 10,15,20 etc. We can use them to guide us as we have none to go by. Don't worry if your a little behind, its all fun and besides, last year my biggest melon was 17 lbs behind at one point !

A little off topic but I believe that a jumbo black diamond seed that I planted from Mr. Brights stock was from a cross with a cc.It is hot dog shaped but nice solid color of the diamond .Possible ?

Inches might be the way to keep up with it. They are usually very heavy to the chart. The long one may be showing some of the original Tom Watson trait.

Thanks thought about planting one where my dead squash plant is but I couldn't remember how long it took to get sets. Guess I will wait till next year to grow the Black Diamond. Note it is too hot in Georgia this year for giant squash.

It may never be too hot but they grow slower over 96 than 90-95. 100 plus they don't do well

I still think that same melon would grow better at 93. I also think the plant and the melon mature much faster hurting the later growth when you have and overall above average hot summer.

I agree Jake! I think a melon can sustain a 5 lb a day growth rate longer in low 90s than in 100+ temps. I wonder if the amount of humidity combined with the temperature is a factor in sustaining good growth?

Hey Jake what do you think about the heat index? also will you email me. I have a couple questions.

This is just observation. Don't know if it right but it. I have noticed that we have two types of summers here. Summer 1: Very hot 100+ many days, relativley low for this neck of the woods, very little rain, lots of sun Summer 2: Not as hot 90-95 some 100s, high humidity, lots of rain, cloudy for many days (high heat index)

So this is what seems to happen in my patch: Summer 1: Pros- Less disease pressure, Melons tend to be heavier to the chart, better early growth because of sunny days, easier to control water Cons- Growth slows down quicker, melons mature faster, insect pressure high (esp;mites) Summer 2: Pros- melons mature slower, grow better at the end (if you beat disease) Cons- high disease pressure, things rot, growth may fluctuate when cloudy, melons on avg. not as dense.

In the first post I meant to say humidity low for this neck of the woods. Option 2 seems to be more work and more heartache sometimes, but it seems that my best melons come from option 2, but I think if I were in a cooler climate option 1 looks good.

My JBD folded up today. Nice plant and had filled up my spot. I had some young sets on, but it could not handle 98 and 99 back to back I guess but we had been 88-98 for almost a month?? I did prune a LOT in the past few days. Could that have hurt it? The 2 CC beside it are ok. I had a day 6 on...almost made the chart Chris! I will put a pic in my diary. Best of Luck to everyone else

neither pruning nor the heat should have hurt it. Probally didn't set due to the heat would have been my guess.

Hank, wow i just saw you picture. Thats something else. Its a disease. Looks like bacterial wilt to cause the whole plant to just die like that. I had it once. I believe it happened to todd Dawson too. Sorry. The upper 90's might slow a plant, but if it has water, it won't die. Sorry

Hank- Sorry about your JBD plant. The plants that I have had with a similar sudden drop to the surface like yours were killed by gophers. The total plant flattens within an hour or so after the root system is cut through unless it is an old plant that has developed roots along all the vines and in that case the plant sometimes will survive the loss of the main roots.

I checked the dead stump yesterday and all was good, at least above the ground. I am going down there right now and dig it up and see.

It was gophers that had done a pass near the stump and bit the main about a foot from the stump. I took a pc of rebar and followed the tunnel. I think it was bad luck the main root was in his way I guess so he bit it in half. I dug half the area and the 3 larger roots I traced were about 6" shy of a shovel handle away from the stump in length. The soil was balling up in my hand like a snowball so we are still a shade wet and the 2 CC plant I have show it in yellow at the stump some. Missed the storms tonight got 3/4" last night. Thanks for the info good luck ya'll I will try some pellets next year as the gophers are bad here but never got me before
