Never had them this bad before.
Been alternating between Bifen and Malathion ever week.
Nuked the crap out of them last week.
Popped up in different spot in patch this week.
How often can I spray?

Merit or dominion is what you need for aphids. Spray it right away to get rid of them. Then you can drench it to keep them away. Bifen is a contact insecticide so you have to cover everything. Watermelons vines get thick so they are harder to cover than a pumpkin. So make sure you use a good systemic too. Act fast aphids don't play.

What kinds of signs do you see when you have aphids?

Every time I have had aphids it looked like some one spilled a pop on my plant sticky sap looking substance merit is the quickest way to take care of them

I think it is the same. Its like 1.47%, Dominion is 10%, Merit or zenith is 75%. Not sure if those are exact but I think that is close. You just have to use alot more of the 1.47. I can't remember the rate to use 1.47%, but there are some old post in the pumpkin boards if you do a search. Chris might know. As much as I hate to admit it I'm guilty of guessing.

aphids are the easiest to get rid of, a good spray of merit and they are gone. Bayer = if its the 1.47% 1 TBS per gallon. spray all over. No more aphids

I always struggle to get rid of them, even with merit. I have them on my pumpkins now for 3 weeks. They are usually on my older leaves that are stiff and dont want to flip over with my fogger. I have been going in with my old back pack pumper lately. I have had some success with horticulure oil. I believe it smuthers them. Only 3-4 weeks till weighoff, so i think i have enough good leaves to keep me going.

Maybe your aphids are tougher than mine LOL ! Mites and squash bugs give me problems.

gtwarren, i would get some real merit instead of that Bayer stuff.

Stuff seems pretty concentrated. How much would I mix of the Merit per gallon? I only have 2 plants so wouldn't need much.

I would stay away from 3 in 1s anyway. Melons don't respond well to some chemicals. I stick with chemicals that are rated for melons now. The box store miticides are useless anyway. I use to spray bifen, but I quit using it on melons. It makes spidermites worse and some people think it harms a melon plants over time.

I think if you keep merit in the plants system through regular drench your not going to have alot of problems with most watermelon pest. You might have to touch up spray sometimes. You might use some bifen if you having lots of squash bug trouble. Assail(acetamiprid)is listed for most melon pest including Squash bug.

If they have the Cullman growers meeting this winter it is worth the time just to get the literature Auburn U gave us last year. Everything you would want to know about insecticides, fungicides and more.

Haven't had mites.
Have Avid ready and waiting for them.
Squash bugs are always bad.
This year it's them and aphids.
The squash bugs are a different species than I've seen before.
Few cucumber beetles as well.
Bifen seems to take them all out,but I usually start to see them again after a few days.
Just have to make it to the 24th.
That's the goal right now.
If she's still growing good,I might gamble for Raleigh.

Sorry I checked the Dominion I have is 1.47. I wondered why I had been using the same rate as Chris posted. Good Luck Esheel.

I have had problems with squash bugs but I add acephate 97 to my rotation and it didn't harm the plants and between that merit and the different thrins I spray seems to have finally controlled the squash bugs...

Thanks Jake.
She is no monster, but a new personal best for me,and I think she could show well at the state fair here.
Hopefully she will go heavy !

I used Spectracide Triazicide concentrate and it worked well in my sprayer. Do it right before sundown and it will go to work when all the nasty pests come to the night time hangout party!!

Drench with Merit once a month and you won't have them. The year I didn't...wow, they get out of control fast.
