Growers, The NC State Fair is saying BRING IT! They have made several major changes to the GPC weigh-off in Raleigh. First of all the weigh-off will be October 12th, 2017 the first day of the fair. Secondly the prize structure will now be a pay by pound basis and will be as follows:
Watermelons: 1st place $6.00 a pound 2nd place $4.00 a pound 3rd place $3.00 a pound 4th place $2.00 a pound 5th place $1.50 a pound 6th place $ .75 a pound 7th place $ .75 a pound 8-10th place .50 a pound
So a first place 300 pound melon would bring $1800.00
Pumpkins: 1st place $3.00 a pound 2nd place 2.00 3rd place 1.50 4th place 1.00 5th place .75 6-10th .50 a pound
So a 1st place, 1900 pound pumpkin would be awarded $5,700.00
There are additional awards/competitions being discussed that will not be decided on for a few more weeks, so stay tuned. All of these are major improvements to an already awesome weigh-off but now you will be able to bring your pumpkin and watermelon AND attend the NC state fair after the weigh-off. The NC State Fair is one of the largest fairs by attendance in the United States, come join us this fall!

Very nice indeed. I grew up east of Raleigh. I do miss that fair. Are one of the new rules,"nobody allowed named Kent?" Lol.

Based on last years results the pay out would have been roughly $7,100 for pumpkins and $5,100 for watermelons, over $12k total....I hope the payout is fully funded. With payouts as stated, I wouldn't be surprised to see the top 10 pumpkins coming in over 1,000 pounds. There's so much jockeying for weigh off prize month up North, you can bet that several will make the 1,000 mile journey to pick some pockets!
Kudo's to whomever has put this structure together, it's amazing.
