My neighbor to the east is putting up a new fence that will block direct sunlight from a large part of my best melon plant in the morning. So... leave the plant as-is, or move the vines that will be closer to the fence away so they'll get a couple hours more sunlight every day? In other words, how risky is moving the vines around and is it worth it?

How big is the plant ? If it has filled out the patch I would just leave it. If the plant is young and the vines aren't that long I might would try it. A photo would give us a better idea. If you do move them, do it GENTLY. They can snap easily.

Now that I've re-read your post, I would just leave them. A couple hours in the morning isn't bad as long as you have good coverage the rest of the day.

The vines are now 10 to 15 feet long in most directions, but haven't filled in between them yet. I think after around 10 AM the fence won't be blocking any of the plant. Sounds like I'll just leave them.

I agree, I would leave the plants I don't think it will make that much of a difference.

If? you try and retrain the vines...do it in the heat of the day, and just a little at a time...colder vines are more brittle & could snap!!! I also agree w/Pchop!!! Peace, Wayne

For what it's worth, I had to move a couple anyway -- it was time to cull the losing melons and the one that I'm leaving is near the fence-line, so the vines it would grow across needed to be shifted. (And the new fence is a step up from the collapsing rusty shed that was there until last year, so I'm not too mad at the neighbor.)
