How do you tell when a Carolina cross is ripe? I haven't sprayed anything not labeled for fruit and vegetables, so at some point I think I'll eat a non-competitive melon or two that for whatever reason aren't going to be giants. (Though a 60 pound watermelon is still pretty big compared to what people see in the grocery store.)

They are ripe when the melon turns dark green close to and around the stem.
