I'd like to do a team challenge for St Jude. If you might be interested drop a message. We can get some ideas together and see what we can come up with.

Thinking something along the lines of an 80% of 250 handicap from personal best. That should help include the northern guys.
Ex: John has a pb of 150 lbs. So an 80% of 250 handicap would start him with 80 lbs.

If your personal best is above 250 lbs you get no handicap.

Mr. jlindley sir...my math is not so swell, but 80% of 250, I think is 164? 80% of 150, I think is 84? Not sure how you are calculating this? Help me here! Peace, Wayne

An 80 lb handicap ?
Probably wouldn’t help me.
Lol.

What about a set up like the tomato grower are using for a team challenge.
One veteran and a couple of rookies ?
Add the weights of all three for a group total ?
Or a veteran grower and one rookie to a group ?
I don’t know, but it might help promote the hobby.

@ Wayne - if your personal best is 150 lbs. That means you are 100 lbs from the 0 handicap of 250. Which in turn means you get 80% of the number required to get to 250. Just like bowling practically.

What about 2 teams with 5-10 growers on each team. Only count each growers largest melon and the team with the highest total weight wins. Jeremy Lindley and Wayne are team captains and have a draft style selection process with Wayne picking first. But since you get first pick Wayne, then Lindley automatically becomes the final grower on his team(it wouldn’t be right for you to be able to pick him). Losing team/captain donates $200 total to Children’s Hospital. One stipulation: If a grower on one of the teams grows a new World Record then that growers team automatically wins the competition! World Record trumps everything as it should. What do y’all guys think? P.S. I’ll take Chris and put the

Okay, I am in also...with one stipulation!!! I don't grow watermelons! So if I pick (5-10) it would not include me!
So next step would be? Do we pick at random, or wait to see who wants to be included (volunteers)? Obviously my first choice is Frank!! What if Mr. Lindley's first choice is himself...then can I pick Mr. Kent? I think I am at a disadvantage here if Jeremy get's #2&3? Kent & Lindley makes an awesome team!!! Peace, Wayne LOL
Let me know, and I am in, know matter what you's incredible growers come up with, format wise! Peace, Wayne

All team members should also be allowed to add $ donations to St. Judes...I think!! Peace, Wayne

That's fine Wayne you don't have to be a grower on one of the teams. If you get first pick then Jeremy picks #2 you pick #3 Jeremy #4 and so forth and so on. Even though Jeremy is one of the best melon growers in the world, he shouldn't have to use one of his first picks on himself. That is why I was saying that Jeremy's final pick for his team will automatically be himself. (Example: if we have 5 growers on each team then after Wayne picks his 5th grower then Jeremy's 5th grower on his team will be himself)

Not sure if I am getting taken here...possibly 3rd best grower right now get's taken off the table & reserved for the last pick on the other team? How bout Jeremy's second pick is himself? Either way I am in & will start by picking Mr. Frank Mudd as my first selection in this year's Charity Watermelon Team Challenge!!! Peace, Wayne

The only way that would be fair Wayne is for you to participate and you be your teams first pick and Jeremy be his teams first pick. If he wants to pick Chris first then it just wouldn’t be right for you to be able to pick Jeremy on your team when he is the captain of the opposing team.

I am in but maybe we should all grow the same seed to make it more even. Not that it will be even but be interesting to see the results at the end , Same seed different regions technics . Kent . Lindley . Mudd . are the captains they pick four growers . five on a team.

Charles B., when you entered this discussion as a moderator I sorta thunk that was a great thing!!! Outside intervention to quiet the misunderstandings! Kudo's to you!! Seems as though Mr. Lindley & I have finished our 5 picks...you originally said 5-10 per team, then stated that I am 300# behind. Can you convince the competition to extend the # on each team to 7? So I have a chance to make up that 300# deficit? Peace, Wayne

jsterry, if it ends at 5 per team....Bartoli did not get picked!!! This is why I want to extend it to 7 per team...and I get the next pick!!! LOL Peace, Wayne
