I have noticed over the years that occasionally the Carolina cross produces melons with a darker green background. (the stripes remain the same) Lloyd Brights 229 at the Pumpkin Daze competition is a good example of this. Any ideas if this is genetic or strictly a reaction to the environment. (method of shading etc.) Any thoughts on this?

Most likely genetics. All of mine have looked the same lighter green rind except the 306 Bartoli I grew this year. At 190lbs it was my smallest and looked like a huge Crimson sweet. Seeds were dark brown too

It was an extra old watermelon that had been a lighter shade earlier. The color change could have been a miticide effect. Malathion will leave a dark stain on watermelons but none was used here. The dark color was not genetic.

Interesting, I remember Jake Holloway had a bunch that looked like the 229 several years ago. He used to dust his melons with dipel (aka BT)

Several of the larger melons at Hamilton were very light and young looking.

I think it has a lot to do with shading, go look at Spencer's melons in the past few years. They are all very light green as he shades his probably better than anyone else.
