How far out would be recommended to set the melon on the main vine. How big should the plant be ? I am pulling melons off now at approx. 3' and 5' on all plants .The longest mains are probably 8' long. Please view my diary and recommend based on the current plant size as of yesterday .Based off of last year, I think it is about 7-10 leaf nodes before you get the next opportunity for a melon to set on a vine.

After looking at the pics of your plants I would probably let the plants get a little bigger before setting a melon. I usually try to have about 100’ of vine before setting a melon and I shoot for around 7-10 feet from the stump. That distance isn’t set in stone though because sometimes you have to take what you can get. I’ve had melons grow over 200 at 3’ from the stump and at over 10’ from the stump. I will be interested to see what the heavy hitters say.

My 226 was at 6 ft. I would get some set. You grafted they have the power in them now. You have a lot of plants so do some different to see what you get. Looking good LBD

Thanks for all the info. We will try some of these distances and see what happens.

I agree with Charles. I always shoot for 100 linear feet of vine. I think the females are larger then.
