Is the germination process for giant watermelons really different from giant pumpkins? What pot size do growers tend to use?

I start in 3 inch peat pots or plastic cups. When the cots appear I transplant up to a 3 gallon container. I wait until the main starts to lay down,(usually about a foot long) and then plant out in the garden. Some plant out sooner.

My problem has always been the watermelon seedlings getting long and spindly. Even when I grow them with the exact same lighting and temperature as AG's, field pumpkins and long gourds that grow just fine. I have heard that you need to get them to cooler temps once they sprout. Will that help?

yes temps of 75-80 are good, or outside in the sun, also if you use flourecent lights, put the light like 1 inch from the plant.

The watermelon seedlings need a stronger light than pumpkins or like Chris said with t5's put them very close. You should remove bottom heat once they germ too.
